Apprenticeships In The Glass & Glazing Industry

News, Politics, Skilled Pathways, Training | 08.09.23

The GGF Apprenticeship Scheme re-branded as the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme

In our ever-growing and developing industry, now is the best time to get involved in the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme. It’s our new and exciting initiative that we are actively inviting all current GGF Members to take part in, and we are also welcoming and encouraging new members to take advantage. The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme has been set up specifically to help our GGF Members recruit, educate and invite the new generation of Traders to the industry, and is set to be a real benefit for members.

Apprenticeships have proved over time that they are a route just as educational and beneficial as taking part in A-Levels and BTEC Level 3 Diplomas. Training opportunities such as these are a great option, with many people believing they’re a thorough way of learning a trade, as you get the hands-on training required and will also get the chance to put your skills into practice.

Whilst there are a number of training programmes for construction related occupations, they do not currently represent our entire industry. The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme is there to fill the gap in career based learning and eventually create a broad range of opportunities available for young people in the glazing industry. The benefits for both employer and skilled pathways trainees are endless.

Why Hire a Trainee?

When you hire a trainee, not only do you get the opportunity to ensure that the next generation are trained by the very best in the industry, you’re also providing a productive and effective way to grow the prospective talent and create a driven, skilful and qualified workforce.

According to an article on the apprenticeships.gov.uk website, when asked, 86% of employers said hiring apprentices helped them develop skills relevant to their organisation, whilst 78% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve productivity and 74% of employers even said apprenticeships helped them improve the quality of their product or service.

However, current Government programmes do not always benefit all employers and do not currently recognise every sector of our industry, so the GGF have created The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme. It is designed to encourage GGF Members to take on trainees and to ensure the next future of industry professionals are trained and educated to a high level of competence that makes them not only employable but a valuable asset to a business.

The GGF Skilled Pathways Pilot Scheme

By using the GGF’s Technical and Health, Safety & Environment experts’ knowledge for the Skilled Pathways Scheme, we were able to create the first of many developments the GGF is working on to tackle the skills shortage issues that are affecting our industry, and ensure everyone in the industry, new or trainee, can continue to deliver their outstanding products and services, resulting in complete confidence for both installers and customers.

The GGF is running a Pilot Scheme from April 2022 where £4,000 of the £8,000 external training provider costs will be funded, and the members who participate will be expected to pay the other 50%.  We will be looking for up to 20 members and trainees to sign up to either our Glazing or Glass Processing schemes in the near future.

The first cohort of trainees started on the scheme in April 2022. In addition, Fenestration, Fire Resistant Glazing and Window Film Application schemes are all in development for 2022 and the GGF offering will continue to be added to over time with the intention of becoming the most complete training provision in the industry.

What You and Your Trainee Can Expect

The GGF Skilled Pathway Scheme is a hybrid model that includes both remote study and physical learning. It entails a series of assessments that will of course, vary for each trainee, which will mean taking the initiative and willingness to participate in individual study. The scheme has been supported by GQA, the awarding body for the glass sector, and those that complete the course will receive a certificate and also their very important NVQ Level 2 qualification.

The trainee will be on the scheme for 18-24 months and during that time ‘off the job’ learning will be required. One of the compulsory learning modules is the 5 Day Introduction Course, which will include; Essential Key Industry Knowledge, the Manual Handling and Storage of Glass, and our Health and Safety knowledge based training. The trainee will also participate in a 1 day CSCS course, an Online Behavioural Safety Training course, and Mental Health Awareness Training.

After the completion of these modules, your trainee will take part in a 3 hour risk assessing course. It will also include alternate 6 weekly digital calls which will be 3 hours in total, and an alternate 6 weekly face to face session with their assessor.

The skills shortage has been a hot topic as of recently, and we as an industry are constantly trying to navigate retaining our top talents, whilst also trying to attract new and fresh talent.

Last week, we hosted a webinar that explained the ins and outs of the scheme, and how it can help to bridge the skills gap we’re facing. If you are interested in what we had to say about the Skilled Pathways Scheme and would like to know more, you’re able to view the webinar below.

Knowing that the government’s estimated Net Zero targets for 2050 requires an estimated 500,000 additional skilled workers across the construction sector, the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme was launched in September 2021 to help companies recruit, train and attract the next generation of talent into the industry.

The GGF are working in partnership with Total Support Training and GQA Qualifications, meaning the Skilled Pathways Scheme is unlike any other. The aim of the scheme is to encourage GGF members to take on trainees, and to ensure they are trained and qualified to a level that makes them a valuable asset to the business.

Refer a new member and get discount on your subscription

Uncategorized | 29.07.21

Many GGF members may not be aware that they can achieve a discount on their next year’s GGF membership subscription by introducing a company to the GGF, if the referred company becomes a GGF member.

The GGF Member Get Member Scheme rewards GGF Members who successfully introduce a new company into GGF Membership with a one-off discount on their following year’s GGF membership subscription. That discount will amount to 20% of the value of the new Member’s subscription.

The discount can be used to reduce your 2022 subscription or can be offered to the new Member to reduce their subscription in year one of their GGF Membership, (a good way for some to reward loyal trade customers).

If you introduce enough new Members, depending on their size, you could accrue enough discount to qualify for free GGF Membership in 2022.

Members should note that the offer only applies if you are first to recommend the potential new members and the company you recommend does join the GGF as a full member.

So why wait, ask the companies you are dealing with if they are in the GGF and if not, then recommend them to the GGF Membership team and get the discount.

To take advantage of this generous offer, email the GGF Membership Department at membership@ggf.org.uk and remember to state the name of the company, contact details of the person in that company you wish to introduce and that if they join that you’ll claim the discount through the Member Get Member Scheme.

GGF withdraws from CTSI scheme

Uncategorized | 19.11.20

The GGF has withdrawn from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) Consumer Codes Approval Scheme due to its onerous auditing process.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “The GGF has given the scheme every chance to prove its value to the Federation and our Members. In the last five years the GGF has invested in its implementation and promotion but it has become increasingly difficult to operate due to the extensive auditing process.”

The GGF joined the Scheme in February 2016 which resulted in the Consumer Code being approved by the CTSI, and allowed the GGF and consumer facing Members to use the CTSI logo when dealing with consumers.

John Agnew added, “From March of this year, I have attended all membership meetings and engaged with members on this matter to advise that the GGF were leaving the scheme and our rationale for doing so. This decision has been approved by the GGF Board and was taken as part of a review of member benefits to ensure that the GGF provides more value for money to all members.”

Though the GGF Consumer Code will no longer be endorsed by CTIS, the Consumer Code itself (which is wholly owned by the GGF), is still in place and all consumer facing members must adhere to it as per the GGF Rules of Membership. A new revised version of the Consumer Code without the CTSI references will be available soon for download from the GGF website. In the meantime, Members who have been using the CTSI logo, are asked to remove the logo and any references from their website and marketing collateral where applicable.

If you have any further questions regarding the GGF Consumer Code please email: membership@ggf.org.uk.

GGF resumes Regional Meetings via video

COVID 19, Events, News | 18.06.20

The GGF is pleased to announce that Regional Meetings will be resuming via video conference from the 1st July 2020.

With COVID-19 continuing to adversely affect the industry, the GGF will for now, communicate with GGF Regions via Webex online video conference to hear Members’ views and concerns as the road to recovery continues to unfold.

Traditionally, Regional meetings have focused on discussions and activities relating to the local trading environment. In addition, Regional meetings enable members to feedback comments on the GGF strategies and activities which operate at a national level.

At the meetings in July, there will be comprehensive reports from the GGF Technical and the Marketing and External Affairs Departments.

At the meetings, the GGF would also like to hear views on glazing in conservation areas and any restrictions enforced by local councils.  The GGF is currently conducting an online survey covering this issue and all Members can still take part. Access Glazing in Conservation Areas Survey here. https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/S52FLGZ

Results will be shared/discussed at the Regional Meetings.

Taking Part in a Regional Meeting

All the July Regional Meetings will commence at 10.30 am and will be of approximately two hour duration via video, which has the great advantages of not having to physically travel to the meeting and ensures absolute safety and adherence to the current COVID-19 guidance.

The Regional Meetings will be as follows;

1 July – North East and Yorkshire Region,

8 July – North West and North Wales Region,

15 July – East Anglia Region,

23 July – West of England and South Wales Region.

This round of regional meetings will conclude with a meeting of the GGF Regional Representatives Committee on 29 July, where the Regional Chairs/Vice Chairs will report at a national level the GGF members’ matters debated at a local level.

To find out more and to book your place on the Regional Meetings please contact Peter Stuttard, GGF Head of Membership by emailing membership@ggf.org.uk

COVID 19, News | 28.04.20

With the Coronavirus (COVID-19) creating chaos in almost every sector across the world, many companies in the service industry are now accepting that work can continue using digital technology and the GGF is no different.

The GGF’s services such as technical support, membership meetings as well as marketing and communications have if anything been more productive during these extraordinary times.

On the technical support, the GGF has issued direct contact details for the technical team. Though working remotely, the GGF Senior Technical Officers, David Borland and Ben Wallace have been gaining and sharing information at key technical meetings via video conference. These meetings have been with standards committees, research organisations and construction trade organisations.

Members Meetings

Throughout this crisis, the GGF Members are still meeting and engaging with each other via GGF meetings held on video conference. In the last four weeks, the GGF signed up to various video conferencing platforms that can hold meetings of up to 100 people. The GGF recently held its standards committee meeting and in the next month has five members meetings scheduled for video conference including;

  • Political Strategy Committee  (6th May)
  • Marketing and Communications Committee (14th May)
  • Home Improvement Executive (20th May)

Members of the above Groups will be sent links by the respective Group secretaries inviting them to join the video conference to take part in the meetings.

Marketing and Communications

The GGF External Affairs and Marketing department is continuing to send Members the latest industry and GGF news as and when it happens. In the last six weeks (since lockdown) the GGF has:

The GGF has also been actively involved in lobbying and contacting Government on behalf of its members and the wider industry.

On the GGF’s continued support, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “With members contacting the GGF every day looking for support, advice and guidance, our team are delivering the levels of service our members expect. I think it’s now down to see if Joe Hague can complete the hat trick of wins in the GGF’s North West Golf Day in September.”

Peter Stuttard, Event Organiser and GGF Regional Manager, said afterwards “I was delighted to see record numbers of GGF Members and guests enjoying the day. This event has been held for many years and just seems to grow from strength to strength.”
