GGF reacts to cancellation of Green Homes Grant Scheme

Uncategorized | 30.03.21

Following a communication direct from Government, the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has reacted to the Government’s decision to cancel the Green Home Homes Grant Voucher Scheme with applications no longer being accepted after 5pm on 31st March 2021.

The GGF received an email from the Directorate of Energy Efficiency at BEIS (Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy) and BEIS issued a press release shortly afterwards stating the Green Homes Grant Scheme’s objective was a short term economic boost to the sector and posted the latest figures on the uptake of the scheme that shows that 96,000 applications and 39,000 vouchers have been issued. The Government target for this scheme was to install measures in 600,000 homes by April 2021.

On receiving the news, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “The cancellation of the scheme comes as no surprise. The interest and uptake of the scheme has been low and this has been due to the limited options for consumers combined with a lack of approved installers to implement the scheme. The criteria to be an approved installer included the high level qualification requirement for companies to be accredited to the PAS 2030 standard within a very short time period. This scheme was announced in July last year without consultation with industry and I hope the Government ensures that all future schemes will be inclusive and for the benefit of all of the home improvement industry and consumers.”

John Agnew - GGF President

Before this year’s budget announcement, the GGF wrote to the Chancellor asking for funding to be made available to help companies attain PAS 2030 accreditation. Last month, the GGF and FENSA wrote to BEIS Secretary of State recommending that the Government should approve installers in competent person schemes as an alternative to carry out the work in the scheme.

John Agnew outlined, “The GGF attended many meetings with BEIS ministers and officials regarding the scheme and both GGF and FENSA offered solutions such as asking for the scheme to enable the replacement of inefficient double glazing and for glazing to be a primary measure. FENSA has overseen the installation of over 64 million Windows & Doors through 14 million installations, so it’s disappointing that FENSA and GGF were not included in the formulation of the scheme.”

The scheme, announced in July 2020 was generally recognised by many as an important initiative and with £3b budgeted, it was the first substantial energy efficient scheme for home improvement in England for several years. It is clear the rate and scale of the delivery of the scheme has been affected by the enormous impact of the COVID pandemic combined with problems administering the scheme.

The Government has reassured that all valid applications received up to 5pm on 31st March will be processed and vouchers in the system will continue to be issued, meaning that delivery of installations on the ground will continue over the coming months. Vouchers that are already issued will be extended to a date that will provide a reasonable time for installations to be completed.

John Agnew added, “On behalf of our members and the industry, the GGF will continue talks with government on energy efficiency in existing building stock and new build, to help the UK achieve its long term zero carbon objectives.”

ONE YEAR ON FROM 23 RD MARCH 2020 – MASTERFRAME WINDOWS THEN AND NOW

Members News | 23.03.21

On that one day, everything changed, everyone thought they saw it coming but nobody thought it really would, a lockdown, and a pandemic so serious that it would force Masterframe, along with many other manufacturers and businesses to close its doors.  In procession of a full order book, it seemed for a brief while that the company could continue to operate the factory, but news from suppliers that they were discontinuing supply, meant that this was not to be.

Carol Slade, Managing Director for Masterframe says “What followed the temporary closure of our business was a time of great reflection by the Directors. We debated on how we could continue to connect with our customers during lockdown.  We realised that the challenge ahead was to keep communication alive between the consumer and our installers so that they could emerge at the other end of the lockdown with some really good prospects.

This led us to pursue a path of investing in digital platforms in order to do this, and we engaged a professional company to shoot, at our cost, 360 degree video footage of our Bygone Master Installer’s showrooms as well as our own.  These virtual showrooms, along with video spotlights on our product features, allowed retail customers to view our products and indeed our Master Installer’s other products, from the safety of their own homes – it kept the conversation going!  It was also for this venture that we were awarded a National Fenestration, Covid Hero Award in 2020.

With our strategy in place for our customers, we worked on the phased return to work programme with great enthusiasm.  A new document was produced for our employees containing 50 new guidelines on actions needed to keep us all safe through the pandemic and to give colleagues the confidence to return to work.  All necessary actions were taken to ensure social distancing was maintained, screens were installed where necessary, a new hand’s free login system was introduced and every effort was made to make the workplace a happy, yet Covid-free environment.  It is testament to this that we have so far not recorded a single case of Covid in the workplace.

There were new challenges every day, but once we returned to the ‘new normal’, as a team we have managed to not only survive but thrive during the year following the lockdown.  Fortunately for our entire business and the workforce that are much appreciated, we have not had to reduce any our employee numbers and in fact we have actually taken on more staff.

We have found new ways to engage with our customers with regular zoom meetings and an ‘Installer Hour’ for our Bygone Network of Master Installers each month.  We are delighted that this new engagement is providing us with such valuable insights on what our customers are requiring from us to enable their success, and ensuring we take the right steps to deliver on that.

Since the first lockdown we have also upped our marketing game, launching two new websites, one aimed at the consumer, featuring both our Bygone sash window Collection and our Classic Collection available to the trade.  The new consumer website is delivering considerably more leads to our Bygone network and we plan to expand our marketing efforts on an ongoing basis into the future. We also have a new dedicated trade website for our trade installers, architects, builders and specifiers to get more specific information on their chosen products and how we can assist them.

In a further effort to keep in touch with customers, both retail and trade, we have gone with the digital flow and attended two virtual Homebuilding & Renovating Shows and  recently taken a stand at FENEX 2021.

We have also emerged as company with a far greater empathy and commitment to creating an environmentally friendly factory and workplace.  Since the first lock-down we have reduced our paper usage by 89%, replaced all overhead strip lighting with new LED fittings and started investing in a dual fuel fleet of company vehicles along with three charging stations to support these at our Head Office in Essex.  Every effort is now being made in the factory and offices to reduce waste at every level and this is an ongoing priority to which the whole team is committed.

We have of course experienced some negatives in the past year too such as supplier shortages, and sadly this has created some issues.  We have, however, all worked together to find solutions in order to ultimately keep our customers happy. We believe we now have the very best, most dedicated team in place to make that happen. “

Carol continues “The challenging times have also not slowed down our passion for innovation and the good news is that there are three new products on the horizon that we will be launching in 2021, along with some other positive change that we are certain will be well received.

We truly feel a new sense of resilience within the company and this is no doubt due, in no small measure, to a sense of real gratitude that we have survived the toughest of times.  Our busy customers continue to support us and we have some very prestigious on-going projects that we are immensely proud of – the future looks bright and we are all set to embrace it.”

The annual GGF Chairpersons’ Forum took place via video conference on 18th March, with all the GGF’s technical groups, committees, regions and countries represented by 33 Members as chairs, vice-chairs or as nominated representatives.

Chaired and hosted by Greg O’Donoghue (Chair of the GGF Marketing and Communications Committee), the Forum was opened by GGF President, Tony Smith and then followed by a comprehensive presentation from John Agnew, GGF Managing Director before an Open Forum when representatives of the GGF’s 14 Technical Groups, 4 Committees and 11 Regions were invited to make comments, raise concerns and ask any questions of the GGF Board, President and Managing Director.

In his opening remarks Tony Smith paid tribute to Stephen Byers, a GGF stalwart and a former Chair who sadly passed away recently. Tony also praised Mark Austin, for his contribution as President, the GGF Board and GGF Group Staff for their outstanding commitment and productivity during an extraordinary year that was 2020.

In his presentation, John Agnew clearly showed the Forum where progress has been made and the extent of the developments of the GGF over the last 12 months including:

  • An increase in technical influence across standards committees (International, European and UK) as well as more direct technical meetings with Government departments BEIS (Business Energy and Industrial Strategy) and MHCLG (Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government) on energy efficiency and fire safety.
  • The output of the GGF technical department highlighting that the GGF holds over 70 technical meetings per year for its Members and has published 44 technical documents in the last 12 months.
  • The investment in Health, Safety and Environment, with the appointment of a new manager leading activity in this area that has seen output, during the COVID-19 pandemic, of dozens of updates and articles, a suite of safe guides and the new Health, Safety and Environment Webinar Programme which has been launched recently.
  • The increase in consumer awareness through the GGF’s Stay Safe with MyGlazing.com campaign which attracted over 200k unique visitors to the MyGlazing.com and has received coverage that has reached a potential audience of over 100 million.
  • Other new products and services were highlighted such as the GGF Deposit Insurance Scheme, the GGF Digital Marketing Toolkit and the new training courses available through the re-launch of GGF Training and the partnership with Total Support Training.

On the Forum, GGF President Tony Smith said, “I was pleased to see over 90% of all the GGF’s Chairs present at the Forum and also to hear their views and concerns for the Federation’s future. We all share the same goal for the GGF to be an exceptional trade body that not only represents Members to Government but also helps us grow our businesses.”

John Agnew added, “It was great to see Members from all parts of the GGF represented at the Forum and I was pleased to demonstrate the progress we have made in what has been an incredibly tough year. We will continue to work on behalf of Members to ensure the Federation progresses to even greater heights. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended and shared their views at this important GGF annual event.”

Deadline approaches for lateral flow tests

COVID 19, Health, Safety and Environment, News, Uncategorized | 23.03.21

All business have until the 31st of March to order lateral flow tests for their employees.

According to the BBC “More than 48,000 businesses in England have signed up for workplace COVID testing.” Lateral flow testing can give you results within 30 minutes to enable you to be proactive in managing the risks of COVID-19. The GGF encourages its Members to use testing where possible especially for employees working in other people’s homes and canvassers. If successful on application for the test kits they are free until the end of June.

Some points to remember when using rapid lateral flow testing;

  • They can act very well as an additional measure indicate A-symptomatic cases however they as accurate as a full COVID Test and therefore they should be used in addition to your other mitigations and not as a replacement.
  • The lateral flow test should not be relied upon on over the NHS testing scheme’s which are more accurate.
  • The lateral flow test should not replace reaction to symptoms e.g. self-isolation.
  • Members should be cautious that testing doesn’t create relaxed behaviors, social distancing and working from home is still the most affect way to manage the risks.
  • Members should prepare for the potential increase in self-isolation from the increase testing

If you haven’t already done so, you can apply for the tests via the link below;

GGF urges Scottish Government to ease home improvement restrictions

COVID 19, News, Politics | 23.03.21

The GGF has issued an open letter to the Scottish Government urging an immediate easing of the restrictions that prevents tradespeople from working in people’s homes unless it is essential.

In the letter, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director says,

“Currently GGF Members operating in Scotland are only allowed to enter people’s homes for essential repairs and are not granted the same trust and confidence as English and Welsh companies, to responsibly carry out home improvements in Scottish properties. The GGF requests that the Scottish government reviews as a matter of priority their guidance on tradespeople working in people’s homes to allow all works to be undertaken in accordance with GGF Safe Working COVID Guidance and that from UK Government.”

Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland unveiled the Scotland’s roadmap to the easing of the lockdown on 23 February stating their would be a “gradual easing” from 5th April. On the 16th March, the First Minister provided more details and firmer timelines stating that the earliest return for non-essential retail in Scotland would be 26th April. There was no mention of when tradespeople could return to working in people’s home to carry out non-essential work.

John Agnew outlined how critical the matter is adding,

“From reports from various sources, the Scottish home improvement industry is now on the brink of complete collapse with potentially thousands of job losses and company closures. If companies can ensure, they are taking all reasonable precautions and operating to the physical distancing and following the Government’s health and safety guidance, they should be allowed to return to work.”

The GGF has also sent copies of the letter to Scottish Cabinet Ministers including:

Aileen Campbell MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government

Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Fair Work and Culture

Kevin Stewart MSP, Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning

Jamie Hepburn MSP, Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills

GGF Launches NEW Digital Marketing Toolkit

News | 12.03.21

The GGF is pleased to announce the launch of its new Digital Marketing Toolkit which will help GGF Members promote their businesses using digital marketing technology.

The new Toolkit has been devised by the GGF Marketing team and web development agency SLX Marketing and consists of 12 modules supported by video tutorials and downloadable presentations.

The Toolkit covers the full spectrum of digital marketing from planning to measurement, content and lead generation through to social media, search engine marketing and customer service.

On the launch of the Digital Marketing Toolkit, James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs said, “I am delighted that this toolkit is now available for GGF Members to use to promote and grow their businesses. The idea and impetus for this new Members’ benefit came from the Members of the GGF’s Marketing and Communications Committee who have helped guide and polish the project over the last few months. So my thanks to those GGF Members and of course SLX Marketing for help to deliver this exciting new product.”

SLX Marketing presented a preview webinar at GGF Members’ Day in October 2020 which demonstrated the necessity and effectiveness of digital marketing . On producing the project, Graham Hansell, SLX Managing Director said:

“With the “re-opening” and re-building of the UK economy, there’s rarely been a better time to put digital marketing at the centre of your business. It has never been more essential to engage with customers using the digital tools, because businesses everywhere are operating in a new norm and a restricted environment, where digital is the main communication channel, to reach, communicate, engage and sell.”

James Lee added, “In the current trading environment and with the challenges ahead, can companies afford to not use digital marketing to best effect? Companies need to reach their customers online like never before. The GGF Digital Marketing Toolkit will provide solutions for those who have yet to really embrace digital marketing but will also be a useful reference for companies who are using digital marketing technology to great effect.”

See promo video here

Going forward, the GGF is planning to hold digital workshop webinars in May and August (dates to be confirmed) where Members can ask questions on the Digital Marketing Toolkit. In the meantime, if Members have any digital marketing queries then a feedback form has been added to the Toolkit homepage, to enable Members to share their views and queries of the Toolkit.

The Digital Marketing Toolkit is an exclusive benefit for GGF Members and can only be accessed via the Members Area of the GGF website.

GGF Tribute to Stephen Byers

Members News, Membership News, News | 12.03.21

The GGF was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Stephen Byers, co-developer of the ClearShield System® and co-founder and managing director of Ritec International Limited. Stephen passed away peacefully on 6 March 2021 aged 79, as a result of pneumonia.

Stephen and his wife and business partner Karen are well-known figures in the glass industry both in the UK and internationally and Ritec has been in the GGF Membership since 1987.

Over the last 30 years, Stephen was very involved in the GGF and held various positions including Chairman of the London Region from 2006-2010 as well as being a founder Chairman of the GGF Modified Glass Group in 2013. Stephen also served for 10 years on the GGF Marketing and Communications Committee and was on the GGF Glazing Executive for 7 years.

Stephen and Karen’s achievements were deservedly recognised, when they received the GGF award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry” at GGF Members’ Day 2019 at Hilton Kensington Olympia.

Stephen’s relentless work with the GGF began with his input into the development of several industry standards, and to make health & safety and ethics driving factors in the growth of his emerging sector. Though a tenacious businessman, Stephen was also an extremely sociable person, attending many GGF and industry events in the UK and abroad.

On hearing the sad news, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “I have shared many meetings and enjoyable social events with Stephen and Karen over many years. It is a very sad loss for the industry and the GGF. My heartfelt sympathies go to Karen and the immediate family at this time.”

Peter Stuttard, GGF Head of Membership said, “Stephen was a true gentleman and stalwart of the GGF Membership. He was a popular and productive Chairman of the GGF London Region. He will be sorely missed and my sincere condolences to Karen and her family and friends.”

James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs worked with Stephen on the GGF Marketing and Communications Committee and also at exhibitions and events. On receiving the news, James said, “I was very sad to hear of Stephen’s passing. We worked together on numerous marketing and PR projects and I will fondly remember the many social occasions when I enjoyed his and Karen’s company. Stephen was a unique and popular personality in our industry who will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with Karen and her family at this difficult time.”

Pioneering the Industry

Stephen and Karen were an inseparable team for over 40 years ago and they challenged the glass industry to transform perceptions and attitudes towards the protection and maintenance of glass surfaces. They displayed staunch determination and admirable dedication to raising awareness on the corrosion of glass, and most importantly how it may be avoided or corrected. And their efforts paid off.

Stephen and Karen single-handedly created a new and global industry for the protection of glass surfaces now firmly and permanently accepted by the whole of the glass and construction industry. Their award-winning ClearShield System® (later rebranded the ClearShield Eco-System®) for the renovation, protection and maintenance of glass, pioneered and still continues to be a leader in ‘non-stick’, easy-clean glass surface technology.

Today their technology is used in more than 70 countries on commercial and residential buildings as well as on ships and other transport vehicles, and in many other applications. But also lesser known, Stephen and Karen introduced crucial innovations such as a ground-breaking system for the protection of glass and ceramic electrical insulators with their VoltShield System™.

Karen Byers commented, “I feel privileged to have enjoyed such a wonderful life with Stephen and to have shared the excitements and challenges of creating amazing innovations with him. I am determined more than ever to keep Ritec International running smoothly, feeling great strength to ensure its prosperity so that Stephen’s legacy may live on for many years to come”.

Karen and the rest of the Ritec team would like to provide reassurance that the company’s activities will carry on uninterrupted in honour of Stephen.

For those who wish to send a message of condolence, please email condolences@ritec.co.uk.

COVID Update: Canvassing and Showrooms in England and Wales

COVID 19, Health, Safety and Environment, News, Politics | 05.03.21

Please see below GGF update on Canvassing and Showrooms in England and Wales.

Canvassing

The GGF issued advice on 25th January 2021 stating that canvassing should not take place for the foreseeable future due to the rising level of COVID-19 infections within the UK. This guidance has now been updated in line with the changing landscape and updated Government advice.

Following the announcement of the “Government’s Roadmap” regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the GGF has been working with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Trading Standards who have confirmed with the Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) that’s based on English legislation; doorstep canvassing can take place under current legislation.

GGF therefore advises all Members who need to canvass to generate sales leads, when this cannot be done remotely, to undertake canvassing subject to the following conditions;

  • Phased and cautious approach to recommence canvassing
  • Avoid areas where Surge Testing is taking place
  • Risk assessment has been conducted and is in place and that staff/canvassers are provided with information, instruction and training.
  • Canvassers should remain outside the property at all times
  • PPE and/or face coverings should be used to assure the consumer. e.g facemasks, face-shields, etc.
  • Where possible limit engagements with customers to 15 minutes maximum, and much shorter if possible
  • Maintain 2 metre social distancing at all times
  • Canvassers should maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and have hand sanitisers etc.
  • Follow GGF Guidance to protect the NHS and Save Lives
  • Think safety at all times: HANDS, FACE, SPACE
  • Checks should be made to ensure canvassers are following the agreed guidance and records kept in the event contact tracing is required

Members should ensure that canvassers have the suitable resources, information, instruction and training to carry out the task in line with the risk assessment.

Showrooms

Glazing (window, door & conservatory) showrooms are still specifically referenced in the Government guidance under inessential retail and therefore the GGF advises that showrooms remain closed until the opening of “all retail” in step two of the Government’s “Roadmap”

GGF will issue further guidance as and when necessary on testing and on other COVID-19 issues.

Members should respect local authority health guidance and are reminded that the guidance itself is subject to change in line with the infection rate and further Government announcements.
