Members meet on Future Homes Consultation

News, Politics | 14.01.20

On 7th January, over 35 GGF Member companies met with the GGF Technical team to discuss the impact of the Government Future Homes Consultation proposals and to finalise the GGF’s response to the Consultation.

The meeting was chaired by David Borland, Technical Officer who led the forum covering the following key points:

  1. Approved Document L (on energy efficiency) was addressed and to achieve the Government’s Zero Carbon targets for new homes by 2050 the following options were discussed.
  2. Option 1 – the immediate introduction of triple glazing as compulsory for new build
  3. Opt 2 – move towards improved U value through improved products by 2025

The Group unanimously preferred Option 2 based on the following grounds. Firstly that Option 1 – compulsory triple glazing with immediate effect would be too difficult to achieve as the industry is not ready (in terms of manufacture, supply and installation) for this significant shift, though long term it should remain a goal.  Option 2 – improving a properties U-Value would be the easier and more gradual process which would allow the industry to use improved and upgraded products/components to achieve the Government targets as proposed in the Consultation.

The GGF will reflect the above in its response.

  • Approved Document F (ventilation) was next on the agenda.

The practicalities of achieving the background ventilation requirements as per the proposal through the use of trickle vents were discussed. It was deemed that this would be difficult in the current systems and trickles vents available. The Group asked that the GGF explore this area further in its response to the consultation to gain greater clarification on the ventilation requirements as proposed in the Consultation.

The general consensus at the meeting was the GGF supported the Government’s agenda, plans and commitment to Zero Carbon by 2050 but will strongly recommend to Government that the Glass and Glazing industry will need at least 5 years to get set up to achieve the 2050 targets. It was unanimously agreed that the industry at present, is not in a position to achieve the targets proposed.

The GGF will issue a hard copy of the full response to the Future Home Consultation at the next Joint Window and Door Group and Conservatory Association meeting in Birmingham on the 6th February, one day before the Government deadline of 7th February for responses to this Consultation. To attend this meeting please contact technical@ggf.org.uk

The deadline to feed into the GGF response has now passed but Members can still respond directly to the Consultation.

You can view/download the consultation proposals by clicking here

GQA Qualifications – the Glazing Industry’s Specialist Awarding Body

Formal Qualifications are the hallmark of our education system; they signify that a person has achieved a certain level – an agreed, consistent standard, in their chosen field; they act as a barometer for third parties to benchmark that person against.

Beyond the field of education qualifications often disappear.  As a person enters the world of work, qualifications are often replaced by training as a way of getting a person onto a job more quickly; in some circumstances, there is no formal or practical training at all, but the same ‘rules’ that are relevant to qualifications in the education sector are equally important – if not more so – in industry.

More financial responsibility ahead for senior managers

News, Politics | 19.08.19

New regulation for financial responsibility is set to be introduced and will mean that senior managers will now be more responsible and accountable for the financial conduct for businesses.

The Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SM&RC) is a new piece of regulation from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) which will replace the current Approved Persons Regime.

Under the current Approved Persons Regime, when you apply for your business to be authorised and regulated by the FCA, your Director(s) will have also applied to become ‘Approved Persons’. Essentially, the FCA vetted these people to determine whether they were fit and proper to run regulated businesses.

Under the Approved Persons Regime, the responsibility for a business complying with the FCA regulations sat with those approved persons (and for many businesses this was actually just one person, such as the Managing Director).

The FCA found that this approach resulted in other senior staff members not taking responsibility or accountability for their business areas, resulting in customer harm.

The purpose of SM&CR is, therefore, to make these key individuals more responsible and accountable for their actions and the actions of their business areas which should then improve conduct.

The GGF and its group of commercial companies are already preparing for this regulatory change. The SM&CR comes in to force on the 9th December 2019.

There will be a presentation at the next joint meeting of the GGF Window and Door Group and Conservatory Association on Thursday 7th November and all GGF Members are welcome to attend.

To find out more about the new regulation please click here.

GGF ready with fresh approach ahead of Cabinet reshuffle

News, Politics | 08.07.19

With the Conservative leadership race in full swing, it will be a few more weeks before the UK finds out who the new Prime Minister will be, which will inevitably be followed by a cabinet re-shuffle.

While all the political activity is going on, the GGF Political Strategy Committee met on 1st July to discuss the status, progress and future plans for the GGF’s campaigns on fire safety, skills and training, energy efficiency. The GGF’s communications to Government departments on all three major campaigns is now on hold until early August when the cabinet re-shuffle is expected to be completed.

Kevin Buckley, GGF Chief Executive commented, “We are anticipating changes in the Cabinet when the new Prime Minister is elected. When the new appointments are made we will then approach the decision makers with fresh communications on our campaigns. In the meantime, we will continue to cascade any relevant information on our main three campaigns, plus Brexit and glazing in conservation areas as and when we have it.”

As part of the GGF’s Fire Safety campaign, next week, Adrian Blaydon, GGF Technical Officer will present on “The importance of fire resistant glazing” at the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Fire Safety in the House of Commons.

Also this month, the GGF will attend meetings will political partners Construction Products Association (CPA) and the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) on shared political goals such as improving fire safety and energy efficiency in buildings as well as looking for ways to tackle the increasing problems around skilled labour shortages and training for the industry.

There will be a full update and presentation on all of the GGF’s political activity at the next joint meeting of the Window and Door Group and Conservatory Association in Solihull on the 8th August. If you wish to attend this meeting please contact Bridie Joyce, Home Improvement Secretary via email bjoyce@ggf.org.uk.

GGF in energy efficiency talks with Government

News, Politics | 23.06.19

The GGF recently attended the British Energy Efficiency Federation’s Plenary at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Conference Centre in Westminster.

Directors of BEIS and senior civil servants were present to update delegates on the following areas:

  • Carbon taxation implications for companies and consumers
  • Zero Carbon Buildings by 2050
  • The progress of the Each Home Counts Scheme
  • The Government spending review 2021
  • Energy Efficiency in the rental sector
  • Clean growth strategy and the public sector

James Lee Director of External Affairs at the GGF

Representing the GGF, James Lee, Director of External Affairs commented, “The discussions were very useful and it was good to receive greater detail of the Government’s plans for energy efficiency in the short, medium and long term. Several issues affecting the glass and glazing industry were raised, in particular, the government-backed scheme Each Home Counts and how it will work for the benefit of home improvement companies. The concerns over local government restrictions on energy efficient measures being installed in conservation areas was also raised by the GGF, to make Government more aware of this increasing problem for glass and glazing companies.”

A full report of this meeting and update of the GGF’s political campaigns will be issued at the next joint meeting of the Conservatory Association and the Window and Door Group on 8th August at Solihull. If you would like to attend this meeting please contact Bridie Joyce, Home Improvement Secretary by email bjoyce@ggf.org.uk

Enjoyable FIT Show for GGF

Events, News | 30.05.19

Following months of preparation and planning the GGF reflected on an enjoyable event as thousands of visitors attended the three-day show spread across three halls at Birmingham’s NEC from 21-23 May.

The GGF stand was a mixture of topical presentations, hospitality and a mini-golf game which many found fun as they attempted a hole in one.
In other parts of the exhibition, the GGF presence was evident with eight presentations in the FIT Show Seminar programme and with over 30 GGF Members exhibiting at the show.

Kevin Buckley, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “This was my first time attending FIT Show and I found it an interesting and useful event. I was also pleased to engage with so many Members who were either exhibiting or visiting.”

Richard Hearn, Head of Membership and Training commented, “I was pleased to participate in the new Skills Thursday initiative. We were able to highlight our focus on professionalising the industry through our “Training the Industry” campaign which upskills and trains Installers and Surveyors. The Skills Thursday debate was a great platform to share views and consider the solutions through effective industry collaboration. Andy Clegg our Chief Trainer and his team set a great challenge with their window and door installation build including 10 faults to identify – this tested even the best of the best who came along to our stand.”

The GGF’s James Lee

James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs, added, “We did a huge amount to increase our profile at this year’s show and I was pleased with our build up, the preparation and the PR for the event. Our stand was well designed for a diverse audience who I feel enjoyed visiting whether it was for information on joining, technical support, training advice or just a social visit. The videos we displayed on the screens seemed to be well received and visitors enjoyed our golf hole in one competition. One outstanding feature of this year’s show was the build and design of the stands. It’s clear our industry put a lot of thought, time and investment into making FIT Show visually stunning.”

The winners of the GGF FIT Show “Hole in One” Golf draw were:

Day 1: Neil Blanchflower

Day 2: Stacey Leahy

Day 3: Martin Greenfield

Congratulations to all three winners and each will receive a bottle of bubbly.

GGF confirms participation at Fensterbau 2020

Events, News | 15.04.19

The GGF has once again agreed to host the UK Pavilion at Fensterbau Frontale 2020 in Nuremberg on 18-21 March 2020.

James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs enthused, “Following last year’s outstanding success, our planning and promotion has now started and we are aiming to make the UK Pavilion at Fensterbau 2020, the best one yet.
I encourage all interested companies to contact us early to ensure they don’t miss out on an opportunity to exhibit at the world’s biggest window and door show.”

Though many of the co-exhibitors from last year’s UK Pavilion have expressed an interest in re-booking their stand space, the GGF is holding a provisional Fensterbau meeting on 13th June at the GGF offices and welcomes all those interested in co-exhibiting on the GGF UK Pavilion.

Having exhibited at Fensterbau since 2014, the GGF UK Pavilion is now a fixture and feature of the show and has become one of, if not the, key destination for visiting companies wanting to either sell into the UK or buy UK products for their own markets.

MyGlazing.com hits ONE MILLION!

News | 04.03.19

The GGF’s consumer advice website MyGlazing.com has hit a landmark one million page views in just over three years since was set up.

MyGlazing.com was set up in 2016 to help homeowners make a more informed choice when selecting windows, doors and conservatories.

Since then, the site has seen remarkable growth with over 600,000 users exploring products and advice from 24 sectors within the glass and glazing industry.

James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs, who started the site, commented, “MyGlazing.com has been an incredible journey. Its creation came from GGF members who were repeatedly asking for a consumer-friendly website because they felt the GGF website was and still is a trade-focused website.

So we set it up and followed a smart search engine optimisation strategy and clear digital marketing plan that included social media, national competitions and adding consumer-friendly features.
The site is now attracting almost a quarter of a million homeowners each year.”

Since it started, MyGlazing.com has also added many features including the GGF Energy Savings Calculator that allows homeowners to calculate their fuel and money savings when replacing their windows and doors.

The site is also home to the national completion Window with a View which boasts winning views from windows from high profile venues such as the Liverpool Museum of Art and Tower Bridge. This competition receives wide PR coverage, raising the brand awareness of MyGlazing.com to millions of homeowners each year.

The essence of the site though is its consumer advice with dozens of useful articles, hundreds of product images and over 300 company profiles. The content is packed with high-quality advice for homeowners installing glazing. It covers areas such as insurance, deposit protection, the legal issues around certification of replacement windows and doors, resolving disputes with companies, planning guidance and a very useful section Top Ten Tips before you buy.

James Lee concluded, “The site has many features, but one of its most useful is our fully searchable directory of over 300 consumer-facing companies. All are GGF Members and follow our Consumer Code of Practice, so consumers should know that when they are using the MyGlazing.com directory they will find the best installers in their area.

Our plans for 2019 are three-fold:
1 – Increase the content on MyGlazing.com
2 – Get more homeowners to the site
3 – and ultimately redirect them to GGF Member companies.

To see the progress of the site why note visit www.myglazing.com.

Home Repair Network Limited
Home Repair Network Limited (HRNL) is an independent Contractor Manager for the UK Property damage industry. The business manages individual networks of approved local Tradespersons and Building Contractors to provide simple ‘hassle free’ services for UK Insurance Companies and Home Owners to manage less complex building damage claims.
Often high quality local Tradespersons and smaller Building Repair Contractors have been excluded from undertaking repairs on properties damaged as part of an Insurance claim due to other networks insistence on using larger Regional Building Contractors.
Many of the larger Regional Building Contractors sub contract their repair work for specialist trades, such as Roofing and Garage Door repairs or where the location of the Customers home is outside their normal working area.  This can often add cost and unnecessary delays to what should be a straightforward process for validating and repairing a property damage claim.
The HRNL aim is to streamline the process for appointing a local Building Contractor, validating the damage incurred, preparing a suitable estimate and undertaking the required repair work by dealing directly with individual approved and vetted local Tradespersons and Building Contractors across the UK.  HRNL are confident that by using local tradespeople, combined with the use of the latest digital technology, the time taken to complete claims can be significantly reduced thereby improving customer service.

FENSA to launch new homeowner marketing campaign on TV

Uncategorized | 18.02.19

FENSA has announced it will launch a new homeowner marketing campaign in 2019, kicking things off with a bang in March with the debut of its first ever TV advert.

The fully integrated campaign will also feature an updated brand mark, a website relaunch, social media promotion, trade advertising, and the provision of sales and marketing toolkits to FENSA Approved Installers.

It will be the first time FENSA, which is a GGF Group company, has advertised on TV since it started operating in 2002 as the original competent person scheme for the installation of replacement windows and doors in England and Wales.

FENSA Director of Membership Chris Beedel says the new campaign has been informed by consumer and industry research, including extensive outreach among installation companies.

It will seek to raise more awareness of FENSA among homeowners and remind them why they need to choose a FENSA Approved Installer for their replacement windows and doors and ensure that they will receive a FENSA certificate when the work is completed.

“Our Approved Installers from the Nationals to the local companies told us they want FENSA to do more to promote them to homeowners, to educate consumers about why they should ask for a FENSA certificate as proof that the work meets the building regulations, is energy efficient and registered with the Local Council,” Chris says.

“So that’s exactly what we’re doing. We’re really excited to take FENSA to TV for the first time and to celebrate the scheme’s success at having registered over 13.5 million installations accounting for approximately 60 million products.”

Chris expects the campaign to also raise wider awareness of energy ratings which were recently showcased at the BFRC Fabricators Forum, and the importance of insurance to back up the installation guarantee.

GGF Commercial Managing Director Anda Gregory says there is much for GGF Members to be excited about in FENSA’s plans for 2019.

Anda Gregory – GGF Commercial Managing Director

“If you’re already a FENSA Approved Installer this is a fantastic opportunity for you. Not only will consumers see your FENSA status as a key differentiator, but having GGF Membership on top of that means you’ll provide additional reasons for them to choose you to install their replacement windows or doors.”

The GGF Consumer Code of Practice, free automatic deposit protection and access to the GGF Conciliation Service are just three examples Anda cites of the sort of added value and assurance GGF Members can offer homeowners on top of their FENSA-approved status.

With FENSA soon to take up residence on TV channels across the UK, all Approved Installers will be able to take advantage by linking in their own sales and marketing efforts.

GGF Members that aren’t installers will also stand to benefit in a broader sense, Anda says, as FENSA’s investment in marketing its Approved Installers will help stimulate the industry, putting replacing windows and doors front of mind for homeowners, and benefit the whole supply chain.

To learn more about the FENSA marketing campaign check out the FENSA website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

GGF forms strategic partnership with Home Repair Network

Uncategorized | 22.01.19

The GGF and Home Repair Network Limited have agreed a strategic partnership that will exclusively offer GGF Members new opportunities to gain emergency glazing related work as part of an insurance repair claim.

The new service will be offered to UK property insurance companies to assist their policy holders who may have suffered damage to a window, door or conservatory. Insurance companies have the reassurance that their customer’s glazing claim will be resolved by using a locally based GGF Member as first port of call.

Background to HRNL

Established in June 2016 by Alan Horton and Ian Hogarth, Home Repair Network Limited (HRNL) is supported by external investment. Both Alan and Ian have over 20 years’ senior level experience working within suppliers to the UK Insurance Industry, including working for Homeserve, Innovation Group and Chem Dry.

The HRNL business undertakes property repair services for several of the leading UK property insurance companies by using vetted and approved local tradespersons and building contractors in other property damage areas such as roofing, garage doors and conservatory structural repairs.

Following rapid growth over the last 2 years, HRNL have worked with insurance companies to identify the benefits of using locally based, specialist contractors to undertake repairs to policy holders’ homes.

Insurance companies in the HRNL have identified a need for a similar service for glazing related claims. HRNL approached the GGF as the leading trade body in the industry, to bring GGF Members into the network and provide the reassurance to insurance companies and householders that the work would comply with exacting standards required by GGF membership.

Richard Hearn – GGF Head of Membership and Training

Following the agreement, Richard Hearn, GGF Head of Membership and Training commented, “The GGF is delighted to partner Home Repair Network Limited in this new initiative which will benefit our members by providing access to an additional stream of business opportunities. It will benefit our members, insurance companies and homeowners.

Proposed Service Offering

HRNL believe a gap exists in the current insurance property repair market for a specialist solution by using professional glazing contractors rather than “multi-skilled” general builders to repair customers’ homes, i.e. a specialist conservatory repair company to undertake repairs to a conservatory roof, not a roofer or a general builder.

The HRNL initiative aims to use specialist contractors working with a maximum radius of 15/25 miles from their base location.  This helps to provide a swift response service when required and reduces the time and cost spent travelling between jobs.

How the initiative works

The scheme is entirely free and optional and GGF Members have to contact HRNL on enquiries@hrnl.co.uk if they want to be part of it.

Once a GGF Member has joined the HRNL, then when jobs occur, HNRL would in the first instance look for a locally based GGF member who has the appropriate skill set for the type of job being passed by the property’s insurance company.

HRNL would then liaise with the appointed contractor (GGF Member) to arrange a mutually agreeable survey of the damage to the property which would be recorded on the HRNL Claims Management platform, which the contractor (GGF Member), homeowner and insurer would also have access to.

When the contractor (GGF Member) representative arrives on site, he/she will collect relevant damage information and photos / video via a HRNL app which is accessible through an iPhone / Android Smartphone, Tablet or Laptop.

The information is then sent back to HRNL whilst the contractor (GGF Member) is on site for immediate assessment by the HRNL technical team. The HRNL technical team will contact the contractor (GGF Member) to discuss the damage reported / recorded damage.

If the claim is covered under the homeowner’s insurance policy (as is the case 90% of the time), then the HRNL technical team will authorise the contractor (GGF Member) immediately to proceed with repairs on a ‘like for like’ basis based on a pre-agreed schedule of rates.

HRNL will in most cases collect any applicable excess by debit / credit card from the homeowner via a secure telephone application.

The contractor (GGF Member) will order any required goods as per the authorised specification / cost and arrange an installation date with the homeowner.

When the required work is completed, HRNL will contact the homeowner to confirm all the authorised work has been completed and if so, process an invoice for payment to the contractor (GGF Member) within 30 days.

HRNL Glazing Network

HRNL is looking to build sub networks of local specialist Contractors for the following job types:

  • Domestic Glazing
  • Commercial Glazing
  • Conservatory Roof Repairs
  • Door & Window Repairs / Replacements

There is no charge for GGF members to join the HRNL Glazing Network, nor are there any deductions from invoices, no license fees or other amounts charged. HRNL generates its income by charging a fixed fee to the Insurance Company for accessing the network, the validation of the claim, the building of an accurate estimate and the management of any repairs undertaken.

Ideally HRNL are looking to have c100 Contractors across the UK for each of the above sub networks to ensure locally based specialists can be appointed to these types of claims.

HRNL Managing Director, Ian Hogarth commented, “I’m delighted to be formally partnering with the GGF to provide a high-quality UK wide glazing related service for our insurance clients and their customers through the GGF’s members.

We believe the GGF is a great partner for HRNL as it embraces the highest standards of professionalism and integrity we require from our network members and we are looking forward to working closely with them to provide additional business opportunities to their members who consistently provide high-quality glazing related repair services.”

To find out more about HRNL’s insurance claim validation and repair services, please contact Ian Hogarth at enquiries@hrnl.co.uk
