GGF RESPONDS TO CONSULTATION ON BUILDING A MARKET FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has called for more fiscal incentives for homeowners retrofitting their homes in response to the recent consultation from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)
The consultation, which closed on 9th January, invites views about the role of government in overcoming barriers to building a sustainable market for energy efficiency in the UK.
The Federation restated its long-held belief that Central Government should introduce a reduced rate of VAT for the installation of energy efficient windows and doors, highlighting that offering a “holiday” would inevitably encourage homeowners to upgrade their properties without the extra 20% cost of the installation. The GGF stressed that a VAT “holiday” would also level the playing field for bona fide companies trying to compete with rogue organisations operating in the informal economy.
In addition to measures on VAT, the GGF also supported plans within the consultation to introduce low interest loans to stimulate demand for energy efficiency measures. The GGF further called on the Government to go further and introduce direct subsidies for higher rated windows and doors, pointing out that these measures are consistently rated among the most popular with consumers.
The need to create a sustainable market for energy efficiency has been brought into sharp focus recently, as Theresa May reshuffled the Ministerial team at BEIS and launched an ambitious clean growth strategy for the country early in January.
