Our comprehensive list of member services
As Building Information Modelling (BIM) becomes more relevant in the glass and glazing industry, the GGF Technical team is in collaboration with other industry experts to develop BIM Product Data Templates (PDTs). The GGF has joined a working sub-group of the BIM Fenestration Relevant Authority (which includes trade bodies such as Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and British Woodworking Federation) to create templates that will make it easier for GGF Members to create their own Product Data Documentation for inclusion in the BIM systems. BIM is the digitalization of physical and functional characteristics of building products, components, materials and systems and is a shared knowledge resource for information that is increasingly being used by architects, building managers, specifiers and contractors.
GAI continue to be at the forefront of the provision of BIM product Data Templates for the wider construction industry. GAI Technical Manager Douglas Masterson, who is also Chairman of BIM Fenestration Relevant Authority has recently overseen the creation of a brand new doorset PDT, through a working group co-chaired with Kevin Underwood of BWF which is available in the technical section of the GAI website.
In the next project for the Relevant Authority, GAI and the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) have agreed to work together to create a series of PDTs for window hardware
Kevin Jones, Technical Officer of GGF said “Like the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) is a long established, well respected and leading trade organisation within our sector. Therefore, we welcome the opportunity to work alongside the GAI in the creation of the GGF BIM (Building Information Modelling) Product Data Templates so that we can offer our Members the very best resources to help them with their business. We look forward to the possibility of future collaborations.”
Douglas Masterson also welcomes this opportunity to work with GGF and said “working together with GGF on areas of mutual concern such as BIM PDTs makes so much sense. As a wider panel of industry experts we can utilise the many years of experience and expertise we both have access to and do something which our combined industries can use and be proud of for many years to come.”
GAI continue to develop their own range of PDTs for hardware, through the ongoing work with the French trade association UNIQ, which will enhance the existing library by ensuring these are in alignment with the ISO 23386 BIM data dictionary standard.
The GGF Technical department will provide updates and status on the BIM Product Data Templates on the GGF Technical Hub. Members will be notified of further developments in due course.

Technical Updates
In an ever-changing industry landscape, it is vital that members are fully aware of changes in legislation and standards that are in development or implemented. Our team analyse and evaluate documents issued by MHCLG and the Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and Irish Government. This covers all ISO, CEN & BSI Standards for our industry whether for review, comment or implementation as well as information provided by associated organisations such as the CPA, CWCT and Glass for Europe.
All relevant material is collated and issued to members in our Quarterly Reports and also provided in Presentation form at all Technical and Regional Group meetings. This is also available for download from this page. In addition, this page includes details and links to any documents relevant to our members as and when they are introduced.

Site Visits & Consultancy
Regrettably, disputes between installer and consumer can occur and result in deadlock. The GGF can visit sites and provide inspection reports covering aspects such as product suitability, quality of installation, compliance with Building Regulations; Industry Standards and Good Practice Guides. Similar disputes involving contractors and professional bodies are also covered in this service.
Reports by the GGF are a well established and recognised form of evidence in Courts throughout the UK and Ireland and is also further enhanced with an Expert Witness Service. This is a chargeable service, however, members will receive a favourable discount.

Structural Calculations
As the boundaries of building design are constantly expanded, it is our industry’s duty of care to ensure that installations are within acceptable and safe parameters. This ranges from glass floors and stair treads to structural glass systems for the building envelope. At the GGF we can provide the relevant calculations including glass requirements and loadings using MEPLA software. SJ MEPLA is a finite element program specially developed to perform static and dynamic calculations of glass structures.
You can calculate any shape of a system including laminated glass, point fixings, balustrade clips and all this for insulated glass. Any bearing and loading situations are possible. You can consider load cases or dynamically calculated impacts for the use of glass as fall protection
Datasheets, Good Practice & Guidance Documents
Long recognised as a major asset to our members, our Technical library continues to expand. Regularly reviewed and expanded, the library is divided into 3 categories: –
Datasheets: Source documents for the industry covering details on products such as IGUS, Toughened, Laminated, Curved Glass, Window Film, Windows, Doors and Hardware. Click here
Good Practice Guides: detailing installation standards and requirements e.g. Windows, Doors & Conservatories.
Guidance for Trade & Consumers: explanatory documents covering topics such as condensation, roller wave, anitroscopy & visual inspection.
All are free to download for members in PDF format. Non-members can purchase from the GGF Shop.
Conformity Marking – CE & UKCA Marks
In this period of adjustment since leaving the EU, the transfer to UKCA marking from the European CE mark has caused issues and confusion thoughout the Construction Industry which is further complicated due to a lack of clarity from the Government for many of the basic principles and operational details. The CE mark will cease to be acceptable in Great Britain from 1st of January 2022. The use of UKCA became effective from the 1st of January 2021.
The introduction of the UKCA conformity mark along with CE UKNI and the relevant test certification is a complex matter, not least when compliance with the NI Protocol is also a consideration. Members, however, can be assured of receiving accurate guidance and advice on how to minimise business disruption during this period.
The Technical team will continue to inform members of any updated information or changes in regulations.

Still no solution in sight for Historic Data and AVCP3s

Despite the efforts of the GGF in conjunction with the Construction Products Association (CPA) and the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) by meeting with BEIS and DLUHC every two weeks, the issue regarding AVCP3s remains as it was in late 2021. Government have finally acknowledged the problem and as an interim measure have issued a new document which would appear to allow UK CABs to sub-contract testing for new products in Europe. However, the issue with historic data for AVCP3s still remains. We are assured that a resolution to this issue is imminent and is currently with the Paymaster General for approval. From today (27th of November), Northern Ireland starts new restrictions enforced under the banner of “Circuit Breaker”.
The impact on the Glass and Glazing industry should be minimal, we have detailed the key points below;
Working from home
It is important that those who can work from home should and it is strongly advised to work with homeowners and customer remotely where possible.
Working on sites and in manufacturing
Construction sites and manufacturing can continue to operate providing workers adhere to governmental and local guidance.
Working in other people’s homes
Working in homes can continue for building or maintenance work, services of trades or professionals can also continue. See extract below from the Northern Ireland Executive website;
“Households are not allowed to mix indoors in private homes. Certain exemptions apply, including:
- building or maintenance work
- the services of trades or professions (close contact services are not allowed)”
Working in the supply chain
Working in the building/construction supply chain can continue. See extract below from the Northern Ireland Executive website;
“Homeware, building supplies and hardware stores can remain open.”
https://www.executiveoffice-ni.gov.uk/news/executive-agrees-two-week-circuit-breaker
Showrooms
In the Northern Ireland Executive’s latest restrictions there has been no specific guidance or legislation around the opening or closure of window and door showrooms – though this could be considered an outlet for building supplies.
Each business is different, so if you have a showroom and are unsure if you should open or close please use the following guidance which could help with your decision.
- To be 100% safe – close your showroom until after the lockdown
- If you are considering opening your showroom, conduct a proper risk assessment for your employees, customers and any other visitors to your showroom
- If you do open your showroom, ensure you adhere to the general Safe Guidance and social distancing
- If you are opening your showroom it is advisable to;
- operate an appointment only basis for your customers to ensure a more controlled and safer operating environment
- redesign the workplace to allow adequate distancing
- face coverings for customers and employees with customers
- Increase ventilation etc.
Please note: your local authority can force you to close your showroom if required during lockdown.
Door to door canvassing
Though not specified in the Northern Ireland Executive’s latest guidance and restrictions, door to door canvassing can continue, but it is advised that you follow these precautionary steps.
- ensure that all canvassers are fully briefed on the safe guidance;
- canvassing is conducted from outside the property, and;
- social distancing is maintained and;
- the safe guidance is followed, and;
- No physical contact should be made with the householder or occupants.
- Please check with your local authorities if you are in any doubt
Please note: Local authorities may ask companies to stop door to door canvassing and they can legally prohibit this practice.
Further Notes:
- Any work that you continue to undertake through the “Circuit breaker” must be in-line with COVID working guidance.
- These restrictions can vary with each local authority, ensure to monitor your local advice and guidance.
Please follow the GGF’s Safe Guidance documents that are underpinned by the Government Guidance.

Over the last few days their have been announcements from the Central and the Devolved Governments of the UK.
The GGF contacted Central Government regarding the new restrictions following the Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement of national lockdown in England from 5th November to 2nd December.
The Government replied to the GGF almost instantly confirming how the glass and glazing sector is impacted in England. The GGF also searched through all the latest guidance from the devolved Governments as well as the Republic of Ireland.
In general, our sector can remain open for business, there is the stark reminder that we need to ensure we operate safely and to the safe guidance. Here is the breakdown of the latest guidance and restrictions, as well as useful links to the key Government websites and GGF Safe Guides, should you need further information.
In England:
- Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.
- Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules within the 3 tier guidance system
- Those who work in construction and manufacturing should continue to attend their workplaces and follow the Site Operating Procedures or work from home if possible
- Builders’ merchants and DIY stores can remain open (and will certainly be able to offer delivery or click and collect services) – although it should be borne in mind that there may be specific local rules relating to retail under the 3 Tier guidance system
- It is not confirmed yet whether showrooms can or cannot open. The list of non-essential retail premises that will have to close during the 4 week lockdown will be announced later this week.
- Government safety guidance must be adhered to when at work, and this is within the GGF Guidance Brochures for installers and consumers. Site Operating Procedures are also available from the GGF website.

Meanwhile, there are no changes to the glass and glazing sector in Northern Ireland since First Minister Arlene Foster’s announcement on 13 October for a four-week circuit breaker lockdown.
In Northern Ireland
- Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.
- Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules within the 3 tier guidance system.
- Those who work in construction and manufacturing should continue to attend their workplaces and follow the Site Operating Procedures or work from home if possible.
- Builders’ merchants and DIY stores can remain open (and should certainly be able to offer delivery or click and collect services).
- Showrooms can remain open.
- Government safety guidance must be adhered to when at work, and this is within the GGF Guidance Brochures for installers and consumers. Site Operating Procedures are also available from the GGF website.
In Scotland
The Scottish 5 tier system to enforce tighter local restrictions was activated at 6.00am this morning 2 November. It is important to monitor what level your local area is in and review the guidance of what is permissible. This information is available here
Currently across Scotland;
- Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.
- Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules within the 5 tier guidance system.

- Showrooms can remain open but may be subject to change under local rules under the 5 tier guidance
- Government safety guidance must be adhered to when at work, and this is within the GGF Guidance Brochures for installers and consumers. Site Operating Procedures are also available from the GGF website.
In Wales
On 21 October, the Welsh Government updated their COVID restrictions with a view to these ‘firebreak’ restrictions lasting until 9th November. Due to the UK Government’s decision to increase English restrictions, the Welsh Government has had to respond and the First Minister, Mark Drakeford, will be giving further updates this week, although the plan is for the firebreak in Wales to end as planned on 9th November.
The Welsh government has updated its guidance with regard to working in other people’s home’s;
“Work carried out in people’s homes, for example by tradespeople, can continue as long as it is managed in a safe way and both the worker and household members are well and have no symptoms of coronavirus. However, we recommend that people consider whether the work can be safely deferred until after this short lockdown.”
Companies can continue to operate manufacturing plants and factories and work in other people’s homes however there should be a consideration to defer the work and if that is not possible then the work should be in line with COVID-19 guidelines.
In Wales:
- Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.
- Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules and if it can be deferred it is advisable to do so.
- Those who work in construction and manufacturing should continue to attend their workplaces and follow the Site Operating Procedures or work from home if possible.
- Builders’ merchants and DIY stores can remain open (and should certainly be able to offer delivery or click and collect services).
- Showrooms can remain open but may be subject to change under local rules.
- Government safety guidance must be adhered to when at work, and this is within the GGF Guidance Brochures for installers and consumers. Site Operating Procedures are also available from the GGF website.

GGF Guidance
Members should use the GGF’s COVID-19 Safe Guides and for manufacturers please refer to the Site Operating Procedures.
GGF Safe Guide for Home Improvement companies working during COVID-19
Site Operating Procedures during COVID-19
Notes to all GGF Members:
- Please monitor your local government websites and adhere to local rules/restrictions or information in specific local areas, if required.
- Keep to the Government guidance (which is also within the GGF Safe Guides)
- Carry out a risk assessment
- Apply reasonable and sensible practice when working during this deadly pandemic
The recent announcements and lockdown is in the main allowing our sector to remain open, but please ensure you stay safe and do everything practically possible to prevent the virus from spreading further.
It’s been a quite unbelievable year and one that many hope never to see repeated but remarkably the glass and glazing industry is coming back despite the many setbacks in 2020. This mood for optimism was supported by the reports from GGF Members who attended recent regional and technical meetings and shared their views on the state of the trade. Here is a summary of their responses.

Retail Sector
The retail side has seen an increase in enquiries beyond expectation, leading to pressure on the estimating teams. The conversion rate seems to be lower but overall record sales being achieved.
General optimism for the future even with the supply chain delivery issues and Brexit.
Consumers seem to be largely understanding about supply issues leading to longer lead times but for some the “COVID excuse”, as they see it, is wearing a bit thin leading to frustration. Many Businesses now looking into 2021 with the expected hard stop of enquiries not happening at all.
Commercial Sector
The Commercial Sector also seems very buoyant but with the added complications of pressure to complete to deadlines. Many clients do not believe that the COVID pandemic is to blame for increased lead times and in some cases insist on proof, some even talking about time penalties.
The biggest challenge is supply chain deliveries with hardware being particularly affected.
System Houses
The Systems Houses are experiencing a particularly challenging time, with approx. five force majeure letters issued across the resin supply chain, leading to many system house material shortages over the past few months.
This coupled with an increase in demand that has far exceeded even the most optimistic of forecasts has put tremendous strain on supply. System Houses are working hard to increase their output where possible to not only meet demand but also to build back the stock levels that have been used up due to the high demand. There is an expectation that resin supply should be back to normal by November/December of this year. The biggest challenge then will be production to meet sales.
The System houses are seeing an increase in enquiries from members of the public as to why the installers are increasing lead times, almost as if they are checking what they have been told.
Other challenges
The recruitment of temporary workers was discussed and there does seem to be available skilled and semi-skilled workers. This shortage is affecting some areas more than others, the Midlands does seem to be particularly affected.
Managing customer expectations was also viewed as key to getting through these unprecedented times. Currently leads times are reported to be generally 12 weeks with even more time required for special foil items.
GGF View

On hearing the views of GGF Members at numerous meetings in October, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director, commented, “It was very interesting to hear the positive views of our Members first-hand at GGF meetings via video. We have also received reports of different parts of the industry going through a “mini-boom” which is very encouraging as we are trying to recover from a quite incredible year. Let’s hope the green shoots of recovery continue but most importantly let’s hope everyone can stay safe whilst working through this pandemic.”
GGF Members are invited to all GGF technical, regional and country meetings which are held via video (Zoom) link. If you want to find out more about the GGF Meetings for the remainder of 2020, then please here and find out the dates, times and key contacts to join the conversation.

The GGF’s Technical Team is continuing to update the Federation’s “best in industry” Technical Datasheets with the introduction of Series 4.6 Channel Glass.

David Borland, GGF Senior Technical Officer commented, “This product has seen a real resurgence in recent times and we felt that GGF guidance on the product and its applications was long overdue. They are a welcome addition to the GGF’s technical library.”
The new Series consists of five comprehensive Datasheets with details on; the types of channel glass available such as wired; unwired and toughened, single and double glazed as well as methods of installation, both vertical and horizontal and all aligned with the relevant British and European Standards.
Whilst the lockdown continues to affect travel for Technical Meetings and Site Visits, the Technical Team continue to use the opportunity to bring the GGF’s library of technical information up-to-date whilst also creating new publications that GGF Members have requested. A new Series 6 for Windows & Doorsets and Hardware is currently in its first draft and will be issued shortly for review and comments to the members of the relevant technical groups.
