The GGF Are Supporting Mates in Mind

Members News | 30.08.23

The GGF are pleased to have recently become a supporter of Mates in Mind. We understand that everyone has their own journey and experiences with mental health, and we are dedicated to providing the resources and support to ensure that everyone in our Group Companies can thrive both personally and professionally.

Who are Mates in Mind?

Mates in Mind are a leading UK charity that are devoted to raising awareness and addressing the stigma around poor mental health. They promote and lead on the development of positive mental wellbeing within the workplace and the GGF are currently undertaking the first steps in a three-year process to improve leadership around promotion of positive mental wellbeing.

Mates in Mind work across industries, focusing on construction, as well as related sectors including transport, logistics, manufacturing, and others. The challenges in providing support for individuals in the construction industry can be a real challenge. Several factors such as no fixed place of work and constant moving from site to site, limited face to face contact and long-standing pressures that often prevent people from seeking help. Arguably since covid, many of the details listed above is very true not just in construction but in all sectors that have remote work and high levels of travel.

3 in 5 employees experience mental health issues as a result of work, with construction workers 3.7 times more likely to take their own life than the average population, we believe this needs to change.

Mates in Mind aims to provide clear information to employers about the available support and guidance on mental health and wellbeing, and how they can address these within their own organisations.

GGF Health, Safety and Environment Manager Lauren Mawford’s Visit to Scotland

Health, Safety and Environment, Members News | 30.08.23

Lauren Mawford our Group Health, Safety, and Environment Manager has been out and about visiting members to provide support and guidance on health and safety practices.

Lauren recently visited Alex Gray and Gordon Mcintyre of the Saveheat Group in Scotland and was impressed by the adoption of new software by the group, implemented by their Health and Safety Advisor Neil Meara and commented that this is indeed a commendable step forward. Transitioning to an online platform for managing health and safety-related documentation, including RAMS, policies, procedures, employee training plans, and equipment maintenance schedules, can greatly streamline processes and enhance accessibility. The ability to conduct safety checks, date and time stamp them, and grant specific staff member’s access contributes to efficiency and accountability. The oversight provided to Senior Management to ensure compliance with safety checks is a proactive measure that can help address any issues promptly.

Lauren visited the following Saveheat Group sites, Saveheat Glass Ltd and Blairs Aluminium Systems Ltd in Hillington and to Blairs Windows Ltd (Timber) and Blairs Windows Ltd (UPVC) based in Greenock. This underscores her dedication to understanding the ground-level operations of our members and the implementation of health and safety protocols. Her observations regarding site standards, housekeeping, and the evident emphasis on health and safety among team members on those sites highlight the positive culture and commitment within these organisations.

The Glass and Glazing Federation holds a significant and influential position within the industry. With its community of members representing a substantial portion of the sector’s annual turnover, the GGF plays a crucial role in shaping and advancing the glass industry. The fact that the GGF supports its members on their journey toward health and safety excellence accentuates its commitment to promoting safe and responsible practices within the industry.

By providing guidance, resources, and support to its members, the GGF not only contributes to the overall success of its individual member businesses but also helps elevate the standards of health and safety across the glass industry as a whole. The considerable size and influence of the GGF’s membership community indicate that the federation has the capacity to drive positive change, facilitate collaboration, and raise awareness about the importance of health and safety measures in this sector.

This dedication to supporting members’ efforts to excel in health and safety reflects the GGF’s commitment to fostering a safe working environment and ensuring the well-being of those involved in the glass industry. As the glass industry continues to evolve, the GGF’s role in promoting best practices, providing valuable resources, and advocating for high standards of health and safety will undoubtedly contribute to the sector’s growth and sustainability.

Time for a change

Technical News | 21.08.23

After discussion with the Chairpersons and following their relevant meetings, it
has been decided to merge the Tougheners, Laminators and Safety & Security
Group into one to form the Architectural & Engineered Glass Group. The
GGF and the Chairs believe that this change and rebranding better defines the
collaborative work between these sectors of the industry. By also widening the
scope and objectives, we are confident that not only will members producing
these products see the benefits of attendance at the meetings but it may also
encourage Architects, Glass Designers and Facade consultants for example to
participate and become part of the Federation and its aim to promote the
highest standards in the industry.

Technical News | 18.08.23

In conjunction with the launch of our new website, the Technical Department are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the New Technical Library. GGF Head of Technical David Borland said “Members have often expressed their difficulty in finding specific datasheets or guidance documents. During the
website rebuild, we took the opportunity to rethink our methods for finding documents and we think this new style will be welcomed by the members. We’ve nicknamed it the 3 click system i.e. any document should be found within 3 clicks of the mouse”. In the meantime, members are requested to contact their
Technical Officer or the Technical Department in general if they experience difficulty in finding any document before the new system is up and running.
