Edgetech MD talks tech, innovation and the future of fenestration at landmark Glazing Summit

Members News | 13.07.18

Edgetech Managing Director Chris Alderson took to the stage to debate the future of fenestration at May’s Glazing Summit.

Well-respected Chris, who worked as European Sales Director for one of the world’s biggest adhesive and sealant companies before joining Edgetech in 2016, discussed how innovation and technology is reshaping the sector as part of a panel of industry experts.

“At Edgetech, we’ve always prided ourselves on focusing on more than just our own day-to-day objectives as a business,” Chris comments. “We’ve got a long track record of helping drive the industry forward, including with our Energy Efficiency in Focus and Triple Glazing Question events, and the Glazing Summit has given us a chance to do so again.

“On stage, while acknowledging that innovation has and is continuing to transform the way we work, I also stressed that fenestration is lagging behind other industries in many ways. Other sectors invest a significant proportion of their annual sales revenue in research and development – in the pharmaceuticals industry, the figure is in double digits. In glass and glazing, by contrast, it’s estimated to be less than 1% – and that’s undoubtedly held us back.

“I also suggested a number of ways fenestration businesses can accelerate and incentivise innovation. At my previous employer, a percentage of our sales targets had to be fulfilled by selling new products, for example.

“At Edgetech, we’re focused on new product development, and we’re also championing modern automated insulated glass manufacturing techniques. We’re seeing other countries already investing significantly in manufacturing automation and the UK needs to embrace these efficient manufacturing methods and technologies to be able to compete in the global marketplace and offset the widespread labour shortages.

“Fenestration faces challenges in the years ahead, there’s no doubt – but seeing the industry come together to intelligently discuss them at events like this makes me optimistic about the future.”

Held at the St John’s Exhibition Centre in Solihull on May 22nd, the Glazing Summit brought together 400 senior figures from across fenestration to discuss new product developments, emerging opportunities, and the future of the sector in the wake of Brexit.

BLOG ARTICLE – TRIPLE GLAZING

KJM’s Managing Director Mark Pearce gives his personal views on Triple Glazing

In an age when energy prices are only heading in one direction, fitting your home with new KJM Veka 44mm Triple Glazed Windows can offer additional savings compared to standard ‘A’ rated double glazing. Well that’s the selling bit over and done with!

Triple glazed windows are still a relatively new concept in the UK. But in colder countries like Scandinavia, where homes endure extreme winter weather, they have been a standard fitment for many years. While we might not get the same severity of conditions, the UK does still suffer from harsh winters and of course increasing energy prices.

There are other ways to insulate your home like the roof, walls and floor, but neglecting your windows can result in cold spots and condensation. Personally I installed 44mm triple glazing in to my own home around three years ago and I have never looked back since then.

Some from within KJM would describe me as “KJM’s Triple Glazing King”, as I passionately believe in the product. I was even asked to speak at our national trade show about the benefits of triple glazing, but declined as it was over three days and in Telford, a long way from our base in Andover in Hampshire.

There are many benefits to installing triple glazing in your home but the important thing to remember is that all triple glazing is not the same. There are many systems available but to really get the maximum benefit then the gaps between the panes of glass should be 16mm and filled with argon gas.

Argon is an inert gas that reduces the heat loss through the panes. If the gap is reduced then the thermal performance is reduced, unless you start to use an expensive gas like krypton. So generally speaking the optimum size of a triple glazed sealed unit should be 4mm glass, 16mm gaps, so in our industry it’s called a 4/16/4/16/4 unit and that equals 44mm in total. You then need to factor in the number of chambers within the frame, the fewer chambers the less insulated the frame. The Veka system uses thermal inserts within the frame to improve the insulation further.

Are there any down-falls I hear you ask? The biggest problem I’ve encountered with my own windows would be external condensation on the glass. This happens because the external pane of glass is not being heated so well by your house, so if the glass drops to less in temperature than the outside air, then you reach “dew point” and condensation forms. It’s the exact reason that you get dew on your car windows. It will generally happen after a cold clear night and it would best be described as a light misting that forms from the centre of the pane, actually it’s in the complete opposite place it would form on the inside. This is because the glass in effect is being heated through the frame and spacer bar, so the outer edge of the glass is warmer than the centre.

When you get internal condensation it’s the opposite way, because in reverse the outer perimeter of the internal glass is the coldest. You can find that ‘A’ rated double glazing will suffer from the same problem, but the effects are much less. As I told my wife when she first spotted the external condensation “It just goes to show how well insulated our windows are”. They usually clear fairly quickly in the morning, so it certainly does not bother me. Further information on this can be found on this technical document from our glass supplier.

Light? Having three panes of glass, with two of them having a low e coating, there would be a drop in the natural light coming through the window as the low e coatings darken the glass slightly. Back to my own experience of my windows at home, from the old double glazing to the new triple glazing I did not notice any difference, so I expect this would only be detected with some some good light monitoring equipment.

Security? Three panes would have to be more secure than two, so there is an obvious difference. The middle pane of a triple glazed unit should be toughened especially if the glass faces a sunny elevation, at KJM we toughen all middle panes regardless of elevation. This helps with the stresses that occur with the heat build up within the sealed unit.

The next thing you might find on the internet about triple glazing is sound insulation. There is a lot of misinformation out there and many claim it improves sound insulation because they believe three panes are better than two. Scientific tests would show that if all three panes are the same thickness of glass then the benefit to sound insulation is very marginally better at best.

If you introduce one different thickness of pane, say one pane of 6mm glass and two panes of 4mm then this would improve the sound insulation more, because the different thicknesses will change the wave length of the sound as it passes through the window, thus reducing the sound transmittance. It would be worth pointing out at this stage that an open window will stop nothing and then there is my other pet-hate “trickle vents” that are notorious for leaking sound. That is a subject for another blog as there are better quality trickle vents on the market.

Extra weight from the glass is another problem, so oversized opening windows and doors are generally a “no-no” but traditional British casement window sizes have not produced a problem for KJM over the last few years, so we are confident in what we sell.

Finally did you know that you can buy the mainly recycled PVC system Veka Infinity in our triple glazing range? So if you really want to protect the environment then you can specify this system. Up to 80% of the core (the bits you don’t see) are made from recycled PVC, the important outside is manufactured from Virgin PVC in a very clever co-extruded process.

In summary I love triple glazing and I can see no reason why if you were changing your windows that you did not consider the option. Yes it costs more, but it will “future proof” your home and in the long term you will recoup your extra costs through the energy savings. It should also make your home much more attractive to potential buyers, if you decided to sell. At KJM it costs nothing to get a quotation and of course we can price for both ‘A’ rated double glazing and provide an additional upgrade cost to triple glazing.

Touchstone Glazing Solutions Ltd

| 18.09.17

With over 25 years worth of experience in the traditional leaded light industry, we developed Touchstone Insulead glazing system (Patented) to specifically overcome the problem of double glazing windows in a heritage building situation. No modification to the existing fabric of the building is required as the Insulead glazing fits where the original was located, and is made using only traditional materials.

Directly glazed into the original stonework

An appearance virtually identical to the original

Touchstone Steelyte opening casements are uniquely designed and constructed from Stainless Steel. Thermally broken and fully weather stripped, they take a full 28mm unit. They combine the narrowest of sight lines with security, durability and elegance. The steel is all but immune from corrosion. Whilst powder coated for the heritage market openers can be supplied polished for modern building applications.

Stainless steel and effectively maintenance free

Due to Touchstone Insulead’s unique ability to take any thickness of unit (28mm standard) it is possible to incorporate specialised glass for the purposes of security, UV filtration, energy conservation and sound inhibition all whilst maintaining a traditional appearance. It is even possible to use the original glazing either within the double glazing or mounted in front or behind as a decorative screen.

Extensive range of glazing options including original

Shapes and out of square windows easily accommodated

Touchstone Insulead has been specifically designed for double glazed units. It is fully drained and thermally broken. In the unlikely event of water ingress through, for example stone porosity, the inbuilt drainage channels allow the water to exit to the outside via weep holes. Combined with warm edge spacer bar technology the highest level of insulation is possible.

Family-run Lee Glass and Glazing celebrates 50 years

| 30.03.17

One of the original GGF Member companies is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017. We look back on the Lee family’s proud history in the glazing industry.

lee glass and glazing directors celebrating 50 years

In the same year the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) marks 40 years of representing glass and glazing companies throughout the UK, one of the Federation’s original Founder Members is celebrating its own impressive achievement of longevity.

Nottingham-based Lee Glass and Glazing Ltd began trading in 1967 and 50 years later this family-run company continues to serve domestic and commercial customers throughout Nottinghamshire.

A family history in glazing

lee-glass-glazing-early-years

Lee Glass and Glazing Ltd was officially created in 1967, however the company’s story begins much earlier with the birth of Harold Lee in 1907. Harold first began to develop his skill as a glass beveller in Sheffield while at Pilkington Glass, before moving with wife Gertrude and family to Nottingham where he joined Nottingham Glass Works.

It was here that son Terry started working as an apprentice at the age of 14, absorbing his father’s teaching and expertise while beginning to learn his own trade in the glazing industry.

At 30, Terry formed Sandiacre Glass together with partners Tony Patton and Peter Court. Four years later in 1967 the company disbanded, paving the way for Terry to launch Lee Glass and Glazing Ltd.

Lee Glass and Glazing Ltd

In the early days the company was based in the old stable on Edwin Street, Daybrook. Terry’s wife Betty provided extensive assistance as secretary while also supporting their three young children.

In 1975 the company moved to new premises on Marshall Street, Sherwood and during that same decade the second generation of Lee Glass came onboard – first Terry’s son Patrick, and then Patrick’s brother Danny and cousins Martin and John.

Terry retired in 1993 leaving the running of the business to Martin, John, Danny and Pat. He nevertheless maintained a regular presence at the factory, stepping in from time to time to carry out jobs requiring the highest level of skill and expertise.

Family owned and run for 50 years

lee-glass-bulwell-factory1

In 2001 the purpose-built Bulwell factory was opened, containing a glass-toughening plant, state-of-the-art glass processing machinery and a paint spray shop. In 2014 the factory doubled in size when the premises next door was purchased, leading to further expansion and the offering of additional niche products such as painted glass splashbacks, worktops, fire rated glass and curved glass – to name a few.

Lee Glass and Glazing is now entering its 6th decade as a family-owned business, currently employing over 40 members of staff. The third generation of Lees are among those staff, and the Lee family are also heavily involved in fundraising and giving back to local communities through sponsorships and sporting events.

Can’t replace your windows? Try secondary glazing

| 03.02.17

A case study shows that where installing new energy efficient windows is not an option, secondary glazing can provide many of the same benefits

Installing energy efficient glazing can help make your home warmer, quieter and more comfortable to live in – and help lower your heating bills.

However replacing your old windows may not always be an option. Whether your budget doesn’t stretch that far or it is impractical or impossible (due to planning restrictions) to replace your current glazing, that doesn’t mean you can’t take action to reduce the heat lost through your windows and enjoy all the resulting benefits.

MyGlazing.com has drawn a case study from GGF Member company Selectaglaze to show how you can overcome the problem when you can’t replace your existing windows or doors.

Case study: Brighton’s historic Ship St Post Office

One reason window replacement may not be an option is when the property in question is a Listed or Historic building.

That was the case with Brighton’s historic Ship St Post Office building, the city’s main post office for many years. Dating back to 1925, and incorporating parts of an earlier building dated 1898, it was recently renovated with the aim of transforming it into comfortable apartments.

However creating warm living spaces turned out to be quite a challenge. The primary windows were draughty, allowing heat to escape and due to the listed nature of the building they could not be changed.

For many homeowners living in heritage or listed properties this can be the reality. Luckily it needn’t be a deterrent.

Secondary glazing solution

In this case, secondary glazing provided the ideal solution. A separate window fitted inside the existing primary window, it traps an insulating layer of air which can reduce heat loss by up to 50%.

Secondary glazing is fitted to the room side of the building and is fully reversible, making it a popular choice for heritage properties.

As well as improving the thermal efficiency of windows, secondary glazing can help reduce the amount of noise that enters a property through closed windows.

GGF Member company Selectaglaze installed 75 vertical sliding units at the Ship St address. All units are bespoke to ensure the tightest fit with matching sight lines where possible, to make them virtually unnoticeable from the outside.

Hazlemere Commercial seeking to appoint a Project Manager to oversee installations

Members News | 17.04.19

Commercial Project Manager

Hazlemere’s Dedicated Commercial Division is looking for a Commercial Project Manager to join their team in High Wycombe, and to oversee double glazing installations in the central South of England.

How Hazlemere Windows have benefitted since becoming GGF members

Members News | 01.07.18

Hazlemere Window Company Ltd became members of the Glass and Glazing Federation in 2015, after looking into the benefits to both the business and its clients before signing up. This decision continues to be one that the company wished they had taken earlier, as often when clients are seeking a reputable double glazing manufacturer and installer they often start by looking for a Glass and Glazing Federation Member.  The GGF represents over 60% of the home improvement industry by turnover. The Glass and Glazing Fedrerations’s opinion is also regularly sought by Government on Regulation and Consumer issues. The GGF, which was established over 40 years ago, is considered as the Voice of the Industry and their opinion is regularly sought by Government on regulation and Technical Standards. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd joined the GGF to further cement its position as established independent manufacturers and installers with an impressive track record stretching back over 33 years, plus to also benefit from the GGF’s Technical input and advice.

GGF technical department

The Glass and Glazing Federation Technical Team can provide support to Members in the following areas:

GGF free technical advice

The GGF Technical Team are there to help Members with any questions they have. If they do not know the answer they usually know who to contact.

GGF input into technical standards

This means they know what will be required in the future as well as influencing how standardisation should change. GGF Members are able to participate at GGF meetings to guide the way forward with standardisation.

GGF technical library

The GGF hold a comprehensive technical library that contains British, European and International standards relevant to glass and fenestration products. Members can reference these documents via the GGF’s Technical Department.

GGF technical consultation and expert witness

The GGF provide a consultancy service that can provide an independent report on an installation. This service is not free and has to be paid for. However, GGF Members receive a discount on the fees. Consultancy reports can be used for a variety of purposes including giving consumers confidence with their installation to confirming what should be rectified to make an installation fit for purpose. The service also provides expert witness evidence should complaints go to litigation.

GGF product testing and approval

The GGF can give specific advice on how a manufacturer can obtain appropriate approvals, for their products, to national, European and International standards. Through their contacts they can arrange all necessary testing.

GGF Governmental influence

The GGF  consistemtly works to build up the necessary links and access to Government, the opposition parties and legislators. This allows for ‘Members’’ views to be carried through to the decision makers to ensure GGF Members are not disadvantaged.

In conjunction to their excellent links to UK Government they have set up a route to spread their Members messages into Brussels. The GGF is linked to various European organisations that provide access to MEPs and the Commission.

The GGF is also linked into a European Monitoring organisation, the British Business Bureau with our CBI Membership.

England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland Building Regulations

These are mandatory requirements that are set by national governments. The GGF provides guidance to Members on what the requirements are, as well as working with the relevant Government Departments to update existing and develop future legislation.

Proper Vetting

All GGF Members who supply, fit or install replacement windows, double glazing, energy efficient windows, doors and conservatories have been trading for at least three years and are regularly vetted to ensure quality of service: this vetting process includes making a site visit to the company’s premises, checking two years of their accounts and taking up trade and consumer references.

Hazlemere Window Company Ltd are proud to be active GGF Members and also that one of it’s Directors, Mark Austin was elected as Chairman of the GGF’s Windows and Doors Group back in January 2017. Mark co-chairs the joint quarterly meetings of the Windows and Doors Group and the Conservatory Association with Phil Goult of Anglian, who is the Chairman of the Conservatory Association.  As such Mark and Phil both sit on the GGF Home Improvement Executive (HIE), with whom all the other chairs sit, representing consumer groups, fenestration hardware suppliers, window and door system manufacturers, technical groups and the Heritage window group etc. In-fact in May 2018 the HIE unanimously elected Mark to be GGF Vice-President, as position that also a position on the GGF Board of Directors assuming they approve the recommendation from the Home Improvement Executive. This is something they also did unanimously on 7th June 2018, so another reason why Hazlemere Window Company Ltd are genuinely proud to be GGF Members.
