Edgetech expertise helps Hourglass go from strength to strength

Members News | 13.07.18

Innovative, reliable and widely respected, Hourglass is one of the UK’s leading glass manufacturers – and, over a seven-year partnership with warm-edge experts Edgetech, the firm’s market-leading products have gone from strength to strength.

A fully-automated Super Spacer line has allowed Hourglass to drastically streamline its manufacturing operation, and seen it become one of Edgetech’s biggest customers.

Founded in 1975, Hourglass began life making decorative glass. It expanded rapidly in the decades that followed, beginning to perform all its own bending, UV bonding, laminating, metal work and decorative finishes on-site, and completing work on projects as varied and prestigious as the Royal Barge, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tower of London and F1 team McLaren’s Technology Centre.

Today, the Gloucester-based business is able to offer one of the widest selections of bespoke glass products in the country – thanks in part to cutting-edge Edgetech innovation, as Claire Miller, Marketing Director of Hourglass parent group Customade Group, explains:

“Hourglass has built its business on a commitment to constantly pushing the boundaries of glass technology – and Edgetech has played a vital role in helping us sustain that.

“Super Spacer’s outstanding performance ensures our glass units offer market-leading thermal efficiency and structural strength – while Edgetech’s automation technology has allowed us to maintain quality even as we’ve significantly increased the numbers of units we produce. It’s more important to us now than ever before as we plan to grow our glass sales dramatically over the next few years, so strong mutually supportive trading relationships are at the top of our agenda.

“We’ve enjoyed a good relationship with Edgetech over the past seven years and look forward to seeing how it develops in the months and years ahead.”

Chris Alderson, Edgetech Managing Director, commented: “Hourglass is a classic example of success through innovation. Just like the Customade Group as a whole, which has helped put lantern roofs and domestic aluminium windows on the map, Hourglass is a pioneer in its field, and it’s been a pleasure to watch them expand and develop over the last seven years.

“For us, it’s a massive vote of confidence in Super Spacer and the Edgetech brand. When we’re the spacer manufacturer of choice for such a progressive, growing company, we know we must be doing something right. Here’s to the next seven years!”

Welsh Government releases Approved Documents L and F for Consultation

Uncategorized | 27.11.20

The Welsh Government has published Consultation Documents in regard to the revision of both Approved Documents L & F – Existing Dwellings & non-Domestic, although there is further documentation to follow on non-Domestic.

The GGF Technical department has quickly reviewed the 6 documents within the Consultation and will provide more detailed information to the Members once the documents have been fully received and reviewed.

Here is a summary of the proposals the GGF Technical team has identified so far.

Approved Documents L and F timelines

Dwellings

  • Spring 2021 new documents for Part L and Part F to be published
  • Autumn 2021 legislation to come into force

Non dwellings

  • Autumn 2021 new documents for Part L and Part F to be published
  • Early 2022 legislation to come into force

Energy Ratings and U Values

Approved Document L : Dwellings (New, replacement or enlarged windows and doors) The proposed changes detailed in Table 10.1 of the proposal include window and door U value reduction to 1.4 down from the current 1.6, and WER B down from the current WER C. The DSER value has yet to be proposed.

Decorative furniture in glass can still be disregarded when calculating U values or energy ratings.

Approved Document F : Existing dwellings. Proposals include the introduction of Table 3.1 that shows that works will be allocated one of two classifications, minor or major.

Changing less than 30% of the total existing windows is classified as minor, more than 30% is classified as major.

  • Category A – Unlikely that the work has reduced the ventilation provision of the dwelling below the requirements of AD F1, no further ventilation required.
  • Category B – Likely the work has reduced the ventilation provision of the dwelling below the requirements of AD F1, more ventilation may be required.

GGF Provides Further Clarity on COVID-19 Guidance

COVID 19, News, Politics | 05.05.20

Following reported confusion in the Glass & Glazing industry last week around the issue of whether or not companies can work in domestic properties, it was incumbent on the GGF as the industry’s leading trade body to contact Government with some of the key questions raised by GGF Members.

Throughout the COVD-19 crisis the GGF has always been strictly aligned to the Government Guidance and Public Health England (PHE) Guidelines. These guidelines were published on the GGF website on 8 April and cited in numerous subsequent GGF articles which included a direct link through to the Government web page on Social Distancing Guidance which can be read here.

The GGF has been in correspondence with Government since the start of the lockdown and has been careful to convey an accurate and credible position based on the information received from Government. In addition, the GGF has also been careful not to get embroiled in speculation and interpretations, which have led to unfounded rumours and misinformation causing reported confusion within the industry. These are serious issues and poor advice could in the worst case lead to loss of life and companies potentially facing very difficult legal positions.

The GGF position remains, as it has been since the outbreak of COVID-19 and that is; that companies must follow Government and Public Health England (PHE) Guidance on working in construction and in people’s homes and if working in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales to follow devolved Governments’ guidance, before taking any decision to carry out installation, repair or maintenance work.

In the last few days, the GGF has sought and gained further clarity from the Government Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and reiterates that companies must follow the latest Government guidance.

  • In unoccupied properties; the Government advises that work can continue, only if it is safe to do so but companies must adhere to the Government Social Distancing guidance, which can be found here.
  • In occupied properties, the Government guidance emphasizes that only essential repair or maintenance work should be carried out and, only if it is safe to do so and is carried out strictly in line with the Government Social Distancing guidance which can be read here.

Note: Essential can be defined as; work required on a building where the occupants’ health and safety could be at risk. For example, this could be a damaged window or door, or a window or door that may be beyond repair and require replacement.

In relation to any essential work involved in a dwelling, this should only be carried out with the prior willing agreement of the occupants/owners.

  • Work that should not be undertaken includes non-essential home improvements inside occupied properties. This could include work such as upgrading windows and doors, glass interiors (such as screens, partitions, kitchen counter tops, splashbacks etc.), decorative glazing and roof lights (unless deemed an essential replacement).
  • Work outside the home on land surrounding the property, the Government guidance shows that this can be carried out if it is safe to do so and in line with Government Guidelines on Social Distancing. This could include conservatories, porches, orangeries, extensions, replacement roofline and glass and garden structures.
  • New build and housebuilding, the Government guidance shows this can continue, if it is safe to do so and in line with Government Guidance on Social Distancing and the Site Operating Procedures (SOP) published by the Construction Leadership Council. (The latest version of SOP was published on the GGF website on 15 April you can read this document here)
  • Manufacturing and processing, the Government advice shows that this can continue, if it is safe to do so and in line with Government Guidance on Social Distancing and guidance on the correct Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). The GGF published this specific guidance on 16 April, it can be found here.

The GGF asks that all companies refer to the Government guidelines in conjunction with the above clarification, prior to taking the responsible decision to undertake work or not.

The GGF emphasizes that health & safety comes first and that prior to making any decision, it is advised that all companies undertake a proper health and safety risk assessment for each individual job. The GGF published guidance on health and safety risk assessments on 7 April, you can read this here.

In addition the GGF urges all companies, prior to undertaking any work, to check with their insurers that they are covered for Public Health and Health and Safety Employer liability.

The GGF also advises that if work is undertaken, that companies must ensure their employees have suitable PPE as outlined in the Government Guidance.

At present, there is no set date for when the Social Distancing guidelines will change or will be eased. The GGF will continue to update Members and the industry as and when information from Government is received. It is in anticipated that there will be further Government announcements this week on Social Distancing in the workplace.

A very special day for RITEC

Membership News, News | 18.10.19

Thursday the 26th of September 2019, was a very special and memorable occasion for Stephen and Karen Byers as they took centre stage at GGF Members’ Day in Hilton Olympia, to receive an award from GGF President, John Agnew for their outstanding contribution to the glass and glazing industry.

As founders and owners of RITEC, Stephen and Karen’s story and their journey through the industry is the stuff of industry legend.

In 1981, Stephen (a chemist from Texas) and Karen (a Danish businesswoman) combined forces to investigate the potential for low-maintenance glass. They subsequently acquired rights to new technology for glass surface protection. Extensive research and improvements to the original formula followed, and the technology was branded ‘ClearShield’.
In 1987, the couple formed RITEC International Ltd and in the last three decades, the company has developed the market for glass surface protection in the flat glass industry, effectively leading the industry and gaining vast field experience to develop their high-quality technology.  –

RITEC’s ClearShield ‘non-stick’ glass has gained wide recognition and acceptance in the processing of glass as the industry and end-users of glass have become increasingly aware of the need to protect glass so that it keeps its promise of clarity, visibility and cleanliness over time.

Today, hundreds of glass processors and fabricators worldwide enjoy the benefits of RITEC’s multi-award winning products and wide range of applications including architectural, decorative, shower enclosure, marine, railway and residential glass.

Committed to product development and innovation, RITEC has not only built on its expertise for the protection of glass but also developed a fully integrated system for the renovation, protection and maintenance of glass. Their contribution to the industry is truly outstanding.

On receiving the GGF award, Stephen commented, “It’s a great honour and wonderful to be recognised by our peers for the work we’ve done for almost 40 years. The journey hasn’t always been smooth but our longevity and continuous development have been down to hard work and a deep-rooted belief in the quality of our products. We are continuing to develop and innovate, so the journey hasn’t ended yet. I’d like to thank all who have supported Karen and me over the years and also my thanks to the GGF. It’s a great organisation and one we’re proud to be Members of. Receiving the award on Members’ Day was very special and will live in our memories forever.”

STAY SECURED BY DESIGN WITH CENSOLUTIONS

News | 24.05.18

CENSolutions celebrates 10 years in business this year, and while they are widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries, they have no desire to rest on their laurels.

. Instead the company is continuously extending its scope. One of the things they are increasingly asked about is the recently amended PAS24:12 regulations and how companies can comply in order to keep selling Secured by Design.

Wayne Rogerson, Joint Managing Director explains: “PAS24:12 came into effect in September 2013, so if you wish to continue selling Secured by Design to the consumer, you should already be up to speed. The standard calls for all glazed doors and windows which have a non-locking handle to have at least one leaf of glass that achieves a P1A classification. Our research has found that this glass needs to be at least 6.8mm laminated. With regards to P1A, this is a classification within EN 356:200 for a drop height of 1500mm. In fairness 6.8mm laminated achieves P2A, which is a drop height of 3000mm, sadly there is no classification for 6.4mm laminated: It is classed as a safety glass.

“There was a great deal of confusion since the changes were announced and judging by the enquiries we have experienced, this is still the case nine months later. We appreciate that changing standards can be confusing, but compliance will make the difference between being able to use Secured by Design in your marketing or not. By checking that your supply chain is offering 6.8mm laminated glass as standard, you can make sure that you are covered.”

As a supplier, Decorative Door Products by RegaLead was one of the first to take advantage of CENSolutions’ expertise to ensure their customers were prepared for the changes in good time for the deadline. Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director explains: “As a specialist in a niche sector of the market we strive to lead the way in advancing specification within it. We have been offering 6.8mm as standard on laminates certified to P1A since August last year. As an integral part of the supply chain, it’s important to us to understand the changing legislation to ensure the correct specification of units to our customers. CENSolutions has played a key role, providing invaluable advice and guidance at every step.”
