Apprenticeships In The Glass & Glazing Industry

News, Politics, Skilled Pathways, Training | 08.09.23

The GGF Apprenticeship Scheme re-branded as the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme

In our ever-growing and developing industry, now is the best time to get involved in the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme. It’s our new and exciting initiative that we are actively inviting all current GGF Members to take part in, and we are also welcoming and encouraging new members to take advantage. The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme has been set up specifically to help our GGF Members recruit, educate and invite the new generation of Traders to the industry, and is set to be a real benefit for members.

Apprenticeships have proved over time that they are a route just as educational and beneficial as taking part in A-Levels and BTEC Level 3 Diplomas. Training opportunities such as these are a great option, with many people believing they’re a thorough way of learning a trade, as you get the hands-on training required and will also get the chance to put your skills into practice.

Whilst there are a number of training programmes for construction related occupations, they do not currently represent our entire industry. The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme is there to fill the gap in career based learning and eventually create a broad range of opportunities available for young people in the glazing industry. The benefits for both employer and skilled pathways trainees are endless.

Why Hire a Trainee?

When you hire a trainee, not only do you get the opportunity to ensure that the next generation are trained by the very best in the industry, you’re also providing a productive and effective way to grow the prospective talent and create a driven, skilful and qualified workforce.

According to an article on the apprenticeships.gov.uk website, when asked, 86% of employers said hiring apprentices helped them develop skills relevant to their organisation, whilst 78% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve productivity and 74% of employers even said apprenticeships helped them improve the quality of their product or service.

However, current Government programmes do not always benefit all employers and do not currently recognise every sector of our industry, so the GGF have created The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme. It is designed to encourage GGF Members to take on trainees and to ensure the next future of industry professionals are trained and educated to a high level of competence that makes them not only employable but a valuable asset to a business.

The GGF Skilled Pathways Pilot Scheme

By using the GGF’s Technical and Health, Safety & Environment experts’ knowledge for the Skilled Pathways Scheme, we were able to create the first of many developments the GGF is working on to tackle the skills shortage issues that are affecting our industry, and ensure everyone in the industry, new or trainee, can continue to deliver their outstanding products and services, resulting in complete confidence for both installers and customers.

The GGF is running a Pilot Scheme from April 2022 where £4,000 of the £8,000 external training provider costs will be funded, and the members who participate will be expected to pay the other 50%.  We will be looking for up to 20 members and trainees to sign up to either our Glazing or Glass Processing schemes in the near future.

The first cohort of trainees started on the scheme in April 2022. In addition, Fenestration, Fire Resistant Glazing and Window Film Application schemes are all in development for 2022 and the GGF offering will continue to be added to over time with the intention of becoming the most complete training provision in the industry.

What You and Your Trainee Can Expect

The GGF Skilled Pathway Scheme is a hybrid model that includes both remote study and physical learning. It entails a series of assessments that will of course, vary for each trainee, which will mean taking the initiative and willingness to participate in individual study. The scheme has been supported by GQA, the awarding body for the glass sector, and those that complete the course will receive a certificate and also their very important NVQ Level 2 qualification.

The trainee will be on the scheme for 18-24 months and during that time ‘off the job’ learning will be required. One of the compulsory learning modules is the 5 Day Introduction Course, which will include; Essential Key Industry Knowledge, the Manual Handling and Storage of Glass, and our Health and Safety knowledge based training. The trainee will also participate in a 1 day CSCS course, an Online Behavioural Safety Training course, and Mental Health Awareness Training.

After the completion of these modules, your trainee will take part in a 3 hour risk assessing course. It will also include alternate 6 weekly digital calls which will be 3 hours in total, and an alternate 6 weekly face to face session with their assessor.

The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme

Uncategorized | 08.08.22

The Skilled Pathways Scheme has been put into action to help tackle the skills shortage the industry is facing. The scheme’s aim is to educate and provide hands-on experience to confirm each trainee is trained and qualified to an appropriate level of competence, so a successful and compliant future in the industry is guaranteed.

In partnership with Total Support Training and the industry awarding body, GQA Qualifications, the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme objective is to create trajectory and fund training for trainees of up to £4000 per GGF Member Company as part of the pilot scheme.

What Is Included in the Scheme?

  • The scheme aims to attract new peoples in the industry, particularly those leaving school and college.
  • There is no minimum grade requirement in Maths and English for candidates to apply.
  • The training provided as part of the Skilled Pathways Scheme is a mixture of physical and remote learning taking place on the company’s premises.
  • The online training function will assist people at any stage in their career path and not just those new to the industry.
  • The GGF will fund half of all training costs, up to £4,000, for all GGF Members in this first cohort of trainees.

The GGF have an unwavering commitment to attracting the next generation of highly skilled workers into the industry and the Skilled Pathways Scheme is one that we intend to become the standard bearer for the industry and a highly rewarding benefit for all GGF Members.

The GGF are Ensuring a Successful and Compliant Future of the Fenestration Industry

As we all are aware, the Government’s strategies and targets for Net Zero between now and 2050, will require an estimated 500,000 additional skilled workers for the Construction Sector. The figure includes the Glass, Glazing and Fenestration Industry, which means there’s a big necessity for more skilled workers.

The GGF are working in partnership with Total Support Training and GQA Qualifications, meaning the Skilled Pathways Scheme is unlike any other in our industry. The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme has been set up to specifically help our Members recruit, educate and invite the new generation of traders to the industry to help improve the skills shortage affecting the industry.

The First Set of Skilled Pathways Scheme Cohorts

The first cohort of trainees that joined the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme have recently completed a 5 day induction course at the office of our partners Total Support Training.

The second cohort of trainees started their induction in August of this year, with the next cohort starting on the scheme in March 2023, training in the Window Fitter speciality.

The Scheme currently covers Glazing, Glass Processing, Fenestration, Fire Resistant Glazing, Window Film Application and Technical Administration, however The GGF are planning to add more specialisms over time.

“We are immensely proud to have brought this scheme, which is unlike any other available in the industry, to reality,” commented GGF Group managing director John Agnew. “We are funding training up to £4000 per GGF Member Company and the completion of this first stage will encourage other companies to commit, after so many have shown interest.”

GGF Announces Skilled Pathways Scheme

Uncategorized | 24.09.21

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is pleased to announce that it will be launching a GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme in January 2022, to help Member companies recruit, train and qualify trainees. Working in partnership with training experts, Total Support Training and the industry awarding body, GQA Qualifications, the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme aims to fund training for trainees of up to £4000 per GGF Member Company.

John Agnew, GGF Group Managing Director

The reasons for this new initiative were explained by John Agnew, GGF Group Managing Director:

“In the current landscape for skills and labour, all companies are struggling to recruit new people into the industry. Currently apprenticeships are not working effectively for the glazing sector. The investment from the GGF will be an incentive for GGF Members to take on trainee and to ensure they are trained and qualified to a level of competence that makes trainees assets, not liabilities to a business.”

The GGF decision was based on both the current landscape and feedback from GGF Members who will no doubt be encouraged by this significant level of financial support.

The Government’s strategies and targets for Net Zero between now and 2050, will require an estimated 500,000 additional skilled workers for the Construction Sector, the figure includes the Glass, Glazing and Fenestration Industries need for more skilled workers. Recognising this need and potential, the GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme will be of real benefit to its Members.

John Agnew adds, “From numerous meetings and discussions with GGF Members, it is clear that they are finding agency staff are not always the long term solution to their skills requirements and existing trainees schemes do not offer training on glazing and glass processing for example. In addition, the current Government and local authority funding, is for workers already in the industry with prior knowledge and not focused on people new to the industry.”

The GGF Skilled PathwaysScheme will set a clear career pathway that will attract new people into the sector including those leaving school and / or college. The training funding will be based around the GGF Glazing Manual which contains the industry’s most accurate and up to date technical information and guidance.

The GGF has set the criteria for companies taking part in the Skilled Pathways Scheme.

  • Each GGF Member will need to appoint a dedicated mentor for the trainees to help steer the trainees through training and qualifications
  • Funding will apply to trainees who are employed by a GGF Member
  • Employers must agree to the GGF vetting and criteria
  • Employers receiving the funding have to commit the balance of the training costs
  • All funding payments will be linked to milestone achievements (measured by qualifications, assessment and skills) in the trainees’ pathway
  • Funding for training and qualifications will cover two years of the program

The GGF Skilled Pathways Scheme will start with a pilot with up to 20 trainees in the following disciplines:

  • Glazing
  • Glass Processing

The below pathways and other will follow as required by members

  • Fenestration
  • Window Film Application
  • Fire Resistant Glazing

John Agnew added, “If the pilot scheme for the Skilled Pathways Scheme proves successful, we will aim to fund training for 200 trainees. The GGF is making the funding and framework available but the success of this initiative is dependent on GGF Members taking advantage of this incentive, to recruit new people to the industry and train them to professional levels. It is a long term strategy and exclusive to GGF Members at present. Companies who are not GGF members may be able to avail of the scheme going forward but no funding from GGF would be available.”

Anda Gregory, GGF Chief Development Officer

Anda Gregory, GGF Chief Development Officer, summed up:

“This is a really exciting initiative and one that our Members and the wider industry have been crying out for. It leverages the GGF’s Technical and Health, Safety & Environment experts’ knowledge to create something that will really work for our industry. It’s the first of many developments we are working on for the good of the industry to help tackle the skills shortage.”

7 ways to stay cool in your home

| 20.07.21

wooden two storey house on sunny day

Winter may well be coming, but summer is here! As the mercury rises we look at some simple ways you can stay cool and comfortable at home this summer.

1. Get the air flowing

On a warm and stuffy day, a breeze can be a lifeline. Luckily it’s one of the simplest things to create – simply open some windows or doors! Whether you have casements, tilt and turn or sash windows, French doors or wide-opening bifolds – even cracking these open a tiny bit can make a difference. If you’re worried about security at night, window locks can keep windows secure while allowing you to benefit from a cooling breeze.

For added effectiveness, strategically open windows or doors on opposite sides of your home. This should set up a corridor of airflow, getting the air moving and provide some cooling relief. It will also provide a healthy dose of ventilation for your home, helping to vent airborne pollutants and moisture, and bringing in clean, fresh air.

2. Throw some shade

Retreating to the shade is a perfect way to stay cool in your home. Using conservatory, door and window blinds and shutters during the warmer months can help keep your living spaces comfortable.

While the evenings may be nice and cool, if your home has spent the day warming up in the sun it can be tough coming home to a virtual greenhouse each night.

During the warmest hours, you can achieve more effective temperature control with blinds and shutters so come the end of the day, you can relax and enjoy the long summer evenings in comfort.

3. Can’t stand the heat? Cook something different…

When the temperature soars outside, anything you can do to keep it cool inside helps. The kitchen is a good place to start, and the oven and stovetop in particular are common culprits. Nothing beats the warmth and aromas emanating from an oven on a winter’s day… in summer however, this can make the kitchen and adjacent living spaces uncomfortably warm.

Where possible, look to limit how much you use heat producing appliances like the oven on warmer days. If you have a barbecue outside this is the perfect time to make the most of it – open up those patio doors and fire it up in the fresh air – or prepare cooler meals and ones that require less prolonged warming.

4. Open those trickle vents

Opening windows and doors is a good way to actively and rapidly ventilate your home. However don’t forget the benefits of passive ventilation – like that provided by trickle ventilators.

This kind of background ventilation can provide a home with a secure and constant source of ventilation even when windows are locked in a closed position.

5. Install energy efficient light bulbs

Light bulbs give off heat as well as light, so switching to ones that radiate less of the former can make a difference. Energy efficient bulbs such as fluorescent and LED light bulbs generate significantly less heat than incandescent bulbs. If your house has more than a few of the latter, changing to eco-friendly bulbs could be a good idea.

Doing so could even save you money in the long term. According to Energy Saving Trust, by replacing all bulbs in your home with LED alternatives you could save around £35 a year on electricity bills.

living room furniture window light

6. Retrofit window film

Rooms with a high proportion of glazing – such as conservatories and orangeries – can be susceptible to overheating in summer. If this is a problem for you, you may want to consider window film as a potential solution.

Specialised solar control window film can help to dramatically decrease heat transfer across windows, keeping rooms cooler and reducing glare from the sun. This can increase comfort and can also be beneficial for furniture positioned next to windows or doors, which is often at risk of fading over time from exposure to UV radiation.

7. Is it time to upgrade your windows?

If your home is overheating this summer, one of the reasons could be that your windows aren’t providing enough thermal insulation.

Normally when we think about energy efficient glazing such as double or triple glazed windows, we think about its ability to keep warmth inside a home and the cold out. Yet the same insulating properties that make this possible also help to reduce the impact of hot outside temperatures by keeping warm air out and the air inside a home cool.

Upgrading the windows in your home can lead to better thermal insulation, as well as reduced noise pollution and a more comfortable living environment. It can also help to lower your overall energy usage and fuel bills.

Talk to a local GGF Member company about how upgrading your windows could help improve the comfort of your home.

Glassi, News | 06.04.21

Welcome to the spring issue of GLASSi.

Firstly, I express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Stephen Byers, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. I knew Stephen very well and shared many GGF meetings and social occasions with both Stephen and his wife Karen. In this issue of GLASSi, we pay full tribute to Stephen, who was a very popular and respected GGF Member for over three decades. He will be sorely missed.

As we enter the new season, we sincerely hope that the UK is on the road to recovery from the huge disruption and restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the last 12 months, the future has at times looked very bleak for business and society as a whole. The future though is now looking a lot brighter with the Government’s roadmap to recovery, the easing of restrictions combined with the success of the Government vaccination programme. This is as result of the rates of infection, cases and fatalities decreasing.

As the situation has evolved the GGF has worked closely with Governments, local authority partnerships and health and safety experts to ensure you receive the latest information and guidance. We will continue to work with all the relevant bodies to ensure you and your staff are protected with the most up to date and best possible guidance.

Though there is much optimism, there is still no room for complacency and we should all continue to follow the guidance, protect the NHS and save lives.

Brexit

Since the last edition of GLASSi, the transition period for the UK to leave the EU ended on 31st December 2020.

With the UK no longer being part of the EU, there have been and still are difficulties for companies who import and export. Members have reported problems with administration at customs, delays in transportation, price increases in haulage generally and containers specifically. In addition, the industry has also seen a change to the regulations around CE Marking and the UK has now introduced a new UKCA Marking system which all companies will have to adhere to if their products fall within scope of the Construction Products Regulation. The GGF Technical Team are working with MHCLG (Government Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government) and our fellow Trade Associations in making representations on behalf of members to try and make this process as straightforward as possible for companies who place products (within scope) on the market.

In this issue of GLASSi, David Borland, GGF Senior Technical Officer has produced an update on the current status regarding CE Marking and UKCA Marking.

Energy Efficiency

The Government recently announced that the Green Homes Grant Scheme launched last September has been cancelled. Since the launch of the scheme (which did not consult with huge parts of the construction and glass & glazing sector in advance of its launch), the GGF raised concerns to Government over the restrictive PAS 2030 accreditation gateway to becoming an approved installer to carry out measures and also the glazing element of the scheme which only allowed for single glazing to be replaced as a secondary measure. The GGF also made representations to Government that Competent Person Schemes should be used as an alternative or complimentary to PAS2030.

Though this scheme hasn’t worked for our industry, the GGF is continuing talks with Government over future schemes that will hopefully have more emphasis on glazing.

GGF Products and Services

In the first quarter of 2021, the GGF team have been extremely productive to increase and improve your benefits.

On the health and safety side, we have launched the new Health and Safety Webinar Programme which is freely available for all Members to attend. The next webinar is on “Managing Mental Health during COVID-19” and is on April 6th. You can book your place at this webinar here.

The GGF Digital Marketing Toolkit was launched recently and includes free access to 12 video webinars accompanied by PDF presentation files for free download. The digital marketing toolkit has a content value of over £1k, so I encourage all Members to take full advantage to grow their online audience, customers and business using digital technology.

Also on the marketing and PR front, the GGF is continuing its consumer campaign Stay Safe with MyGlazing.com following the success of the campaign in 2020 when over 200k consumers looking for advice through the pandemic visited the MyGlazing.com website for advice. The campaign was also publicised in over 100 consumer publications reaching millions of homeowners.

The GGF Technical team in that last 12 months has published 42 new technical publications and is continuing up review and update a further 26 as part of the ongoing technical documentation review process. In addition, the Team organised two exclusive Technical Forums in February and it was great to see over 100 GGF Members attend via video link, “The Ban on Laminated Glass in Facades and Balconies Forum” and then just a few days later attend the “Forum on the Government’s Future Homes Consultation” which will impact the Building Regulations approved documents L (energy efficiency) and F (ventilation).

Members Meetings

In the first few months of the year we have already seen an increase in Members meetings and particularly in the Regional meetings, Window Film Group and Heritage Window Group. With Member engagement increasing via video meetings, we are looking at returning to face to face meetings once the lockdown restrictions allow such gatherings. We will of course keep you updated on when this will happen and rest assured we will also be continuing with the video conferencing as well as face to face meetings, to enable all Members to engage regardless of distance and time.

An up to date list of GGF Members Meetings for 2021 can be see here. Please feel free to contact the assigned GGF Secretary if you want to find out more about our meetings and/or if you wish to attend any of the Members Regional or Technical meetings.

Finally, I was delighted to see all parts of the GGF membership represented at the Chairperson’s Forum (held on 18th March). With 33 Chairs/Representatives at the Forum it was an exceptional attendance and many of the points raised by Members have been fully taken on board and will be address by the GGF Board and Staff. A full report of this meeting will be issued to all who attended to cascade to all Members.

We look forward to working on your behalf to help your business through these trying times.

Enjoy GLASSi

How to keep a conservatory cool in summer

| 02.06.20

Conservatories are bright, airy spaces you can enjoy in all seasons, however, an overheated conservatory can spoil the fun. Discover our tips to reduce heat and keep cool this summer.

timber conservatory everest

There is a reason the conservatory is so popular as a home extension – this versatile glazed extension has endless design possibilities and can be adapted to any lifestyle.

An abundance of glazed surfaces bathe the conservatory in natural light. Yet with sunlight comes heat! Energy-efficient glazing is designed to minimise heat lost through windows, however, if this heat becomes trapped overheating can become an issue.

Luckily there are several things you can do to ensure your conservatory reduces its heat and remains a cool and relaxing place over summer.

Ventilate your conservatory well

ventilate conservatory anglian

Air trapped in a conservatory is a surefire recipe for overheating. The most obvious way to reduce the chance of a ‘greenhouse effect’ occurring is to ensure air can circulate easily between the indoors and outdoors.

There are many ways to ventilate your conservatory – from the rapid purge ventilation of simply opening a window or door, to passive background ventilation via permanent roof vents or trickle ventilators in windows.

Adequate ventilation will help keep your conservatory cool in hot weather – but that’s not all it will do. It will also ensure airborne moisture and pollutants are regularly flushed out of your home.

This will keep the indoor air quality high, contributing to a healthier and more comfortable living environment (and helping lessen the chance of condensation).

Shade your conservatory from the sun

Conservatory by Ultraframe

Roof and window blinds, shades, awnings, and sails can shield a conservatory from direct sunlight and provide welcome respite at the height of summer.

Some strategic planting in the garden can have a similar effect. Trees planted adjacent to a conservatory can provide natural sun cover – deciduous trees can even still let the sun through during winter.

Install solar control or tinted glazing

Conservatory with solar control glass by GGF Member

The sun brings light but also heat. Special types of glazing can act as a filter between the two, accepting the light while reducing the amount of the sun’s heat transmitted into a conservatory.

Solar control glass allows sunlight to pass through but reflects and radiates away some of the heat. Using this type of glazing on the roof and windows of a conservatory can have a significant effect on the temperature within.

Retrofit window film to glazed surfaces

Solar bronze 20 film fitted to conservatory roof by Able Install

Don’t want to replace your conservatory glazing? Window film can provide similar reductions in solar heat gain.

Applied directly to the glass, specialised solar control window film can help to dramatically reduce overheating in conservatories. It can also help in reducing glare and provide UV protection that protects furniture and furnishings from fading.

Our advice: Plan ahead & combine strategies

Victorian conservatory by Kitson Windows

The best way to prevent a conservatory from overheating is to design it that way from the start. Talk to a conservatory professional about your options at the design stage to ensure your new glazed extension remains comfortable even at the hottest time of the year.

If you do find yourself with a conservatory that gets uncomfortably warm, consider all of the above options not just separately but in combination as well. As each conservatory design and location is different, the combination of strategies that will best tackle an overheated conservatory will be unique to each situation.

Glazing professionals can help you find the right solution for your conservatory – find your local GGF Member companies using the ‘Find a glazing company’ search above.

Events, News | 12.03.18

The GGF once again provided a strong presence for the glass and glazing industry at Security and Counter Terror Expo, part of UK Security Week, which took place this year from 6-7 March at Olympia London.

Over the two days of SCTX 2018 more than 10,000 visitors passed through the expo including architects, building managers, designers and specifiers. They were there to take part in the UK’s leading national security event – a showcase of the capabilities, strategies and intelligence to keep nations, infrastructure, business and people safe.

GGF Technical Officer Michael Sulston was present on the GGF stand and was kept busy with many enquiries related to safety and security in glass and glazing.

As well as providing expert technical advice on toughened glass,  laminated glass, window film and more, the GGF distributed relevant publications and leaflets – and of course free copies of the GGF Safety and Security Glazing Good Practice Guide to the lucky first 10 visitors to the GGF stand each day.

Security and Counter Terror Expo continues to be an important date for the GGF, giving the Federation an opportunity to represent its Members to a range of industry sectors and to promote best practice in glass and glazing for safety and security.

Next week the GGF continues its busy events calendar by hosting the UK Pavilion at Fensterbau Frontale 2018 in Nuremberg, Germany.
