CMAs: GGF and MyGlazing.com shortlisted
The GGF and MyGlazing.com have been shortlisted as finalists in three categories for the Construction Marketing Awards, the annual event that showcases creativity, innovation and effectiveness in marketing across the construction industry.
The GGF’s 40th Anniversary Campaign in 2017 has been nominated in the “Best use of Research and Insight” Category, while the Federation’s consumer website MyGlazing.com (in conjunction with Refresh PR) has been nominated for the “Best Use of Press and PR” and the “Best Mid-Budget Campaign”.
On hearing of the nominations, James Lee, Director of GGF Group Marketing and Communications, commented, “I am delighted that the GGF, MyGlazing.com and our PR agency Refresh PR, have been recognised and are in the running for these awards.”
The GGF’s 40th Anniversary campaign entailed extensive research that trawled the GGF’s archives with some of the reference books going back over 200 years of trade bodies in the glass industry. From the research, the GGF produced a timeline starting from 1328 and London’s Guild of Glaziers (the industry’s first know trade body) right through to 2017 and the GGF’s position in the industry as the leading trade organisation for the last 40 years.
James Lee continued, “The in-depth research was an important element for the full blown campaign because we created an easy to follow road map of our industry and it showed why the GGF has become the main trade body for the industry.”
Refresh PR were appointed the GGF’s consumer PR agency in 2015 and have since help grow the awareness and interest in MyGlazing.com (the GGF’s consumer website).
Laura Mashiter, managing director of Refresh PR, added: “We are delighted to have worked with the GGF on the MyGlazing.com campaign since 2015. We’re thrilled it has been shortlisted in two categories alongside many high calibre entries. In Window with a View’s third year, we’re delighted that it continues to deliver great results for MyGlazing.com – we’re excited to make the competition even bigger and better next year!”
Through the unique Window with a View completion, Refresh has helped the GGF and MyGlazing.com achieve over 25 million viewing opportunities in the consumer media. In addition, MyGlazing.com has recently surpassed 500,000 users since it was first launched in September 2015 and is on target to reach one million page views in February 2019.
The Construction Marketing Awards Gala Dinner takes place on Thursday 29th November at Hilton Bankside, London.

Stevenage Glass celebrates 50th anniversary
GGF Member company Stevenage Glass recently marked a major milestone – half a century in the glass and glazing sector operating in Stevenage, St Albans and beyond.
Reaching your 50th anniversary is a notable achievement for any company, and in light of this, Stevenage Glass is using this momentous year to blend the old with the new to show just how far they’ve come since 1966.
Owner and managing director Kim King commented:
“Throughout the last 50 years, we’ve seen many changes as the company has flourished and expanded, including moving to larger premises on Cavendish Road after we outgrew our starter premises on Argyle Way, and we haven’t looked back since! Even after the move, we’ve already made a couple of extensions to keep up with the demands of the growth of our business even more.”
Stevenage Glass began to extend their product range further to better accommodate for the needs of their ever-growing customer base, with their range now including a wide selection of glass products for interior home improvement for bathrooms, kitchens and living areas.
These new additions complement their core services, such as emergency glazing, secondary glazing, window repair and glass cutting, all of which have grown and developed over the last five decades.
Proud GGF Members
As a founding member of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), Stevenage Glass offer an impeccable standard of work, consistently meeting all industry standards across the board, and their affiliation with GGF further serves as an example of their commitment to the industry and the standard of work they do.
Nigel Rees, GGF Chief Executive, commented:
“Congratulations to Stevenage Glass on their 50th Anniversary. They have been with the GGF since the very beginning of the Federation and their attention to high quality and service has obviously been an integral part of their success. This year is a special year for all at the company and the GGF wishes them all the best with their celebrations.”
New branding launched
Part of Stevenage’s celebrations include the launch of updated branding. As a testament to the company’s hard work and the quality of their products and services that have carried them through the last five decades, the company worked with fellow GGF Member Adtrak Ltd to create a style that celebrated their past and incorporated a glass element to symbolise their expertise in the product.
Stevenage Glass decided to resist the temptation to modernise as much as possible to make the brand feel completely new, feeling that this would be missing the point – after all, reaching their 50th anniversary is an impressive achievement! And here is the finished product:
The final look is minimal and modern while also echoing the way things used to be, combining a new, technologically advanced feel with the timeless quality of an old, experienced business. Simple lines are used to make glass pane-like shapes, and a light, understated colour scheme creates a theme that runs throughout the company’s branding.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years
Owner Kim King spoke on the company’s future:
“After an extremely successful first 50 years, Stevenage Glass is setting the bar high to make the next 50 even better with further progression and plans for the future – so watch this space!
One thing is for sure: we will always remain Stevenage’s original glass manufacturers and heritage glaziers. On behalf of the company I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our staff and customers who have remained loyal and supported us throughout the years; we wouldn’t be here celebrating our success today if it weren’t for you!”
We’re sure that over the years you’ll be hearing more about the brand, as well as more about how they got to become one of the industry’s leading experts.

GGF Defends Members and Confirms Industry Position
GGF and its Members have been subject to recent attacks online. The most recent appearing on DoubleGlazingBlogger by Anthony Jones, Chairman of National Federation of Glaziers.
Giles Willson, GGF Managing Director, has defended GGF Members and underlined the GGF’s work and position as the industry’s leading trade body.
See full response below.
“Rather than engage in a public cyber squabble, we respond to Anthony Jones’ earlier post, with a few questions for Anthony with regard to his inaccurate (and bordering on defamatory) comments as well as providing some facts to help him understand the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), our work and the scope of our long standing success, as we try to continue to improve the operating environment for our Members and the wider industry.
Consumer-biased laws?
For several years, the GGF Home Improvement department and specialist groups have been working hard on behalf of the industry on consumer legislation with Government departments and the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. We are therefore curious to know which “consumer-biased laws” Anthony is referring to and which GGF Member companies he feels have brought these “consumer-biased laws” upon the industry. Please can you provide this information Anthony?
Selling techniques v dishonest practice
Each company, whether a GGF Member company or not, decides on its own business model as to pricing and discounts. It is not a dishonest practice provided the trader is clear to the consumer as to what the list price is and what discounts apply. We appreciate that many in the industry have an opinion on traders which have a list price with substantial discounts available, however this practice is also common in many sectors such as automobiles, kitchens, furniture etc., and is not illegal or unethical.
GGF Members and voting
No single GGF Member or group of GGF Members “calls the shots” at the GGF. At GGF meetings when a vote is taken, the democratic policy in effect is “one Member, one vote”, so each Member company has just one vote on an issue whether it’s a large, medium or small company. However, we estimate that GGF Members do represent over 50% of the glass and glazing industry by turnover, so the GGF being the main trade body is approached by, and considered by Government, on issues of policy affecting our industry.
Such is the GGF’s strong relationship with Government departments and given the Federation’s size and scope, it is reasonable to consider the GGF as “the voice of the industry”. However to add even greater strength to our voice to Government, the GGF last year set up a new independent group in conjunction with several other trade bodies and manufacturers called The Glazing Supply Chain Group which is a forum that meets quarterly to share views and opinions across all areas of the industry and not just from GGF Members.
The GGF Consumer Code of Practice
The GGF Consumer Code of Practice formerly The Code of Ethical Practice (the name changed over ten years ago) was revised and re-launched last year to GGF Members, and is freely available for download on the GGF website https://www.ggf.org.uk/ and on the GGF’s consumer site https://www.myglazing.com. The Code has been updated, taking into account changes in consumer legislation. The GGF is currently in the process of gaining approval from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute for the new Code. It is compulsory that all GGF Members who sell directly to consumers have to sign up to the Code and if they breach it, they risk losing their membership in accordance with GGF Rules.
It would be interesting for all readers if Anthony could explain which part of The GGF Consumer Code of Practice he considers a “sham.” You can download the GGF Consumer Code of Practice here:
https://www.ggf.org.uk/publication/code_of_practice
How the GGF deals with dishonest practice
It is clear in our new Consumer Code that Members must not state inflated prices for goods and services above those of the company’s price list, then offer discounts or “special one- day offer prices” that are not true; only genuine discounts agreed by the company must be applied.
GGF Members are operating completely honestly and ethically by complying with the GGF Code. As stated before, it is the commercial decision of traders as to the pricing and business model they operate; however they must comply with the GGF Code if they are a GGF Member. As a trade body the GGF is bound by the Competition Act not to discuss pricing or pricing methods with Members. Members must however comply with the law and the GGF Consumer Code. Any Member in breach of the Code (and the GGF Rules) would face a disciplinary procedure through the GGF Finance and Membership Committee.
The status of the GGF in the industry
With our Membership comprising most of the major players and leading experts in the industry covering 35 different sectors, the GGF has naturally become the main trade organisation in the industry.
Given its position, the GGF offers its Members over 70 Membership benefits and great networking opportunities at over 200 specialist, regional and national group meetings across the UK.
Though networking is undoubtedly a very popular benefit, the GGF’s many other benefits include: solid political campaigning, unrivalled technical and health and safety information, a comprehensive library of publications and standards, consumer leaflets and support, website directories, business support and multiple online benefits such as Member company profiles on GGF websites ggf.org.uk and myglazing.com, plus the GGF digital news service and digital magazine. With so much digital development, the GGF has grown its online audience by over 400% (132,000 unique visitors in 2015) in 4 years. In the last couple of years the Federation has also enjoyed record attendances at meetings and many high profile companies in the industry have joined.
Given the quality, scale and profile of our technical publications, articles and specialist groups, it is no surprise that we are often the first point of contact not just for GGF Members but also for Government, the media, related third parties, the wider industry and consumers to answer questions and provide information on the key issues affecting our industry. Indeed, our technical content in the public domain is even referenced and used by the National Federation of Glaziers, which the GGF provides royalty free.
We are the first to admit that we are not perfect, but we do try our very best for our Membership and the wider industry to make the operating environment better for all. We always encourage any company not in Membership to consider joining and to contact us for more information about the Federation and its activities. If requested we would also happily invite interested companies to attend one of our meetings.
We trust this response will be taken in the spirit it is intended, to educate, inform and help Anthony or anyone else who may have any doubts about the position, integrity and work of the Glass and Glazing Federation, the industry’s leading trade body.

GGF Underlines Positions on COVID-19 Crisis
The GGF has underlined its positions on several issues around the developing COVID-19 crisis and its impact on the glass and glazing industry. In a statement to GGF Members and the Industry, John Agnew GGF, Managing Director clarified the GGF’s position with regard to the issue on whether companies should choose to close temporarily or to continue operating safely. The statement also addressed the cash flow crisis and the economic situation ahead.
Statement from John Agnew, GGF Managing Director:
Since the outbreak of this terrible virus and the impact on our industry, the GGF has maintained a consistent and responsible position to help primarily our Member companies and also the wider industry.
During the crisis, the GGF has aligned itself with Government advice and guidelines which have admittedly changed as the crisis has developed. There is no doubt, that some of the Government’s messages for our industry have caused confusion and misinterpretation. The GGF can’t answer for the Government but can only interpret and relay the information as and when we receive it.
To date, the GGF has been extremely active during the COVID-19 pandemic. To highlight this, a summary of all of our activity has now been published on our website. Our regular communications to GGF Members and the wider industry as well as our engagement with government and related construction trade bodies have been welcome from the feedback we have received. In addition, throughout these extraordinary times, the GGF has also maintained its core services to underline our leading and proactive role as the industry’s main trade body.
In the past few weeks, some in the industry have questioned our position on various Government messages and none more so than the specific issue around installers continuing to work in domestic premises.
On this point of whether or not window and door installers and glaziers should be considered essential or non-essential workers, the GGF sought and received clarification from Government which stated that there was no distinction between essential and inessential workers in construction. The Government is keen for the construction industry to continue, as long as it is safe to do so under Public Health England Guidelines and in line with the Government’s Social Distancing guidelines.
Following this clarification and the GGF’s distribution of the Government health and safety information, we have still received some queries regarding the issue from companies who are unsure.
For further clarity, the GGF position on this issue, is in line with the Government’s advice and Public Health England Guidance, and as such we therefore urge employers to do the following:
- Only continue to work if it is safe to do so within the health and safety guidelines as published on the Government website
- Conduct a thorough health and safety risk assessment
- Check with your insurers that you covered for Public Health and Health and Safety Employer liability
The GGF has also recently published the Government guidance for manufacturers and processors should they choose to continue to work.
With thousands of companies in our industry, I respect that every company’s situation may differ and that is why the GGF can’t offer individual or specific advice, but instead encourages employers to follow the Government guidelines and to make their own responsible decisions for the health and benefit of all concerned.
Other than health concerns, the issue facing most companies is the cash flow crisis. The GGF has published online advice articles and issued Government guidance on how companies can cope with cash flow problems. As well as the immediate financial needs, many businesses are also now preparing for the financial issues ahead with the inevitable recession on the horizon and lengthy economic recovery.
We are in unprecedented trading landscape and the GGF advice to all companies is to make a plan if you haven’t already done so to help you get through this situation.
The GGF has internally adjusted its resources and refocused its strategies to ensure Members get greater and more specific support. We have published and promoted all of the relevant Government financial packages, which have been significant and comprehensive. I have no doubt that the responsible businesses in our industry, will use this Government support, take help them plan their future accordingly.
The new Government Business Support Hub has many options available should you require to apply for financial support.
The GGF has worked tirelessly throughout this crisis for the benefit of our Members and the wider industry and we will continue to do so. We are constantly monitoring and reviewing the Government updates, communicating key information and news to Members and the industry as well as relaying our Members’ concerns to Government. In addition, we are also continuing to provide the high level of technical services that are a core part of the GGF Member benefits.
These times though extremely difficult will undoubtedly pass. For now, it is all about following Government guidance, staying safe and making the right decisions to ensure we emerge ready for when business and life returns to normal.

GGF to lobby Government for more COVID-19 support
Over the next few weeks the GGF will campaigning on Members’ behalf your as they step up their engagement with Government on their support for businesses throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
Government Lobbying
The GGF will be in direct communication with Government Ministers and Departments to campaign for change on the following issues:
- More financial support for the glass and glazing sectors, at least equal to that given to the retail, hospitality, leisure and tourism sectors.
- A reduction in the rate of VAT from 20% to 5% on all energy efficient glass and glazing and on the installation of windows and doors.
- In view of the potential lockdown and isolation, that installers and glaziers are included in the “essential workers” category, to access homes where energy efficient measures are paramount to making their homes healthy, safe and secure.
- Requesting that the Government opens up more channels to ECO funding to ensure homes are made healthier (currently the only route is via TrustMark)
- To grant GGF Emergency Glaziers the same status as all emergency services during any lockdown, curfew and/or isolation periods
The GGF will be using its political advisers and communication channels to ask for these changes to be made with immediate effect as companies UK-wide struggle to cope with the dramatically changing business environment.
The GGF has also set up a new COVID Business Continuity Support for Members which includes regular updates and new section in the Members area of the GGF website which will house all the relevant information and guidance as and when the GGF publishes/distributes it to Members.

Fire Resistant Glazing Training? Book Your Place Now!
As part of the GGF’s “Training the Industry” programme, all specialist glaziers and installers who work with fire resistant glazing systems are encouraged to book their places with the first course taking place on 27 February at the GGF Offices.
This Fire Resistant Glazing Training course covers the theoretical knowledge required to work alongside practical experience. The course will provide glaziers with the highest quality knowledge and information on fire safety covering both products and installations. The course is also aimed to empower successful candidates with the knowledge to explain to others on site the importance of the correct selection and installation of fire resistant glazing.
Adrian Blaydon, GGF Technical Officer and Secretary of the GGF Fire Resistant Glazing Group (FRGG) is leading the course and urged all companies responsible for the specification and installation fire resistant glazing to attend the course.
“This course is designed to give installers not only an appreciation of the function and importance of fire-resistant glazing but also the practical knowledge to properly apply and install fire-resistant glazing.”
The course contents will cover:
- The behaviour of glass in fire
- What is fire resistance?
- Types of fire-resistant glass
- Regulations and Responsibilities
- Importance of the glazed system
- Evidence of performance
- Product stamps
- Information available
At the end of the course, all attendees will be given a certificate of attendance for their own and/or their companies records.
Adrian summarised, “Following the tragedy of Grenfell Tower, it should go without saying that it is essential for installers to know how critical fire safety is, from our research we know that poor installation can lead to catastrophic failures, so ensuring installers are aware of best practice is key. If you feel you or your colleagues’ knowledge of fire resistant glazing is lacking, then I would advise that you book on the course as soon as possible.”
