GGF reacts to cancellation of Green Homes Grant Scheme

Uncategorized | 30.03.21

Following a communication direct from Government, the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has reacted to the Government’s decision to cancel the Green Home Homes Grant Voucher Scheme with applications no longer being accepted after 5pm on 31st March 2021.

The GGF received an email from the Directorate of Energy Efficiency at BEIS (Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy) and BEIS issued a press release shortly afterwards stating the Green Homes Grant Scheme’s objective was a short term economic boost to the sector and posted the latest figures on the uptake of the scheme that shows that 96,000 applications and 39,000 vouchers have been issued. The Government target for this scheme was to install measures in 600,000 homes by April 2021.

On receiving the news, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “The cancellation of the scheme comes as no surprise. The interest and uptake of the scheme has been low and this has been due to the limited options for consumers combined with a lack of approved installers to implement the scheme. The criteria to be an approved installer included the high level qualification requirement for companies to be accredited to the PAS 2030 standard within a very short time period. This scheme was announced in July last year without consultation with industry and I hope the Government ensures that all future schemes will be inclusive and for the benefit of all of the home improvement industry and consumers.”

John Agnew - GGF President

Before this year’s budget announcement, the GGF wrote to the Chancellor asking for funding to be made available to help companies attain PAS 2030 accreditation. Last month, the GGF and FENSA wrote to BEIS Secretary of State recommending that the Government should approve installers in competent person schemes as an alternative to carry out the work in the scheme.

John Agnew outlined, “The GGF attended many meetings with BEIS ministers and officials regarding the scheme and both GGF and FENSA offered solutions such as asking for the scheme to enable the replacement of inefficient double glazing and for glazing to be a primary measure. FENSA has overseen the installation of over 64 million Windows & Doors through 14 million installations, so it’s disappointing that FENSA and GGF were not included in the formulation of the scheme.”

The scheme, announced in July 2020 was generally recognised by many as an important initiative and with £3b budgeted, it was the first substantial energy efficient scheme for home improvement in England for several years. It is clear the rate and scale of the delivery of the scheme has been affected by the enormous impact of the COVID pandemic combined with problems administering the scheme.

The Government has reassured that all valid applications received up to 5pm on 31st March will be processed and vouchers in the system will continue to be issued, meaning that delivery of installations on the ground will continue over the coming months. Vouchers that are already issued will be extended to a date that will provide a reasonable time for installations to be completed.

John Agnew added, “On behalf of our members and the industry, the GGF will continue talks with government on energy efficiency in existing building stock and new build, to help the UK achieve its long term zero carbon objectives.”

Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme extended by one year

Legislation, Politics | 19.11.20

The Prime Minister has announced a one-year extension to the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme, until the end of March 2022. The announcement was made as part of the Prime Minister’s ambitious 10 Point Plan for a green industrial revolution.

Homeowners across England will now have until the end of March 2022 to have energy efficiency upgrades to their homes completed through the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme, helping up to 600,000 households save up to £600 on their energy bills.

The scheme funds up to two-thirds of the cost of green home improvements up to £5,000, or 100% of the cost for homeowners on low incomes, up to £10,000. Measures covered include insulation of walls, floors and roofs, double or triple glazing when replacing single glazing, and low-carbon heating like heat pumps.

The Prime Minister announced the extension of both the Green Homes Grant and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme in his 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, designed to help the country build back greener and help reach the UK’s key target for net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

£1 billion will be available next year into making new and existing homes and public buildings more energy efficient, including through the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

The GGF has persistently lobbied Government for an extension to the scheme and the additional 12 months, now gives companies a chance to register to the scheme and undertake the work.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director, “We welcome the news of an extension to the scheme but we will continue discussions with government to change glazing from a secondary measure to a primary measure. In addition, we are also asking government to consider replacing inefficient double glazing as well as single glazing under the scheme.”

The GGF understands that over 40,000 vouchers have been issued in the first few months of the scheme. To find out more about the scheme and how you can register as an installer under the Green Home Grant Voucher Scheme please visit the government web page https://www.gov.uk/guidance/green-homes-grant-scheme-register-as-a-certified-tradesperson-or-business

GGF expresses disappointment to Government over Green Scheme

News, Politics | 14.08.20

The GGF has written to the Government to express its disappointment in the Green Homes Grant Scheme which is due to be launched in September.

In letters to the respective departments, BEIS (Business Energy and Industrial Strategy) and MHCLG (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), the GGF highlighted the problems with the scheme including:

  • Restricting the scheme to single glazing upgrades only – when there’s an estimated 20m homes with pre-2002 inefficient double glazing
  • Limiting the scheme to companies who are accredited to PAS 2030
  • Targeting just 600k homes in the scheme, approximately only 3% of the overall retrofit market

On the letters to Government ministers, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented,

“The GGF has received many complaints from angry and disappointed Members following the unveiling of the scheme’s details. The vast majorities of companies don’t qualify for the scheme and even if they went down the route to achieving PAS 2030, it will take time and money and doesn’t guarantee the work. After the impact on our industry due to the COVID pandemic followed by damage caused by the Chancellor’s statement a month before the scheme details were released, our industry deserves and expects better support from Government.”

The GGF is continuing communication with both BEIS and MHCLG on several work streams including the “Road to Recovery” Repair Maintenance and Improvement (RMI), Brexit and Fire Safety. GGF members will be fully informed when any new information becomes available.

GGF continues pressure on Government over Green Homes Grant Scheme

News, Politics | 17.07.20

Following the GGF’s recent communications to Government highlighting the poor timing of the Green Homes Grant Scheme, the industry’s leading trade body is continuing to crank up the pressure on the Government.

Last week a letter was sent to Alok Sharma MP, Secretary of State for BEIS (Business Energy and Industrial Strategy), highlighting concerns over the scheme’s criteria for approved installers and assessors.

The content of the letter related to the potential criteria including compliance with PAS 2030 (the standard for retrofit installers) and PAS 2035 (the standard for individuals such as retrofit assessors and retrofit co-ordinators). The GGF opposes the prospect of PAS 2030 being part of the criteria and proposes that the scheme operates to the Competent Person Scheme (CPS) rules.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director explained, “The GGF is against the prospect of installers having to comply with PAS 2030 if it is part of this scheme’s criteria, on several levels. Firstly there is the cost that companies would have to invest in a scheme that may deliver very little in return. Secondly, the process and time it will take companies to attain PAS 2030 could be lengthy and it can be an expensive process for SMEs with a relatively low return. The Competent Person Scheme rules should suffice for any energy efficient scheme. It would then open up the opportunities to most companies in the industry.”

In the letter to, the GGF once again emphasized the poor timing of the scheme and urged Government to also include all glass and glazing energy efficient products, following some reports that it would only be for single glazing upgrades to double glazing.

The question regarding the timing of the scheme was also put to Chancellor Sunak in the House of Commons last week by Felicity Buchan MP (who met with the GGF in February to discuss various campaigns). Live on Parliament TV, Chancellor Sunak replied that both he and Alok Sharma were aware of the timing issues and that he was “leaving it up to BEIS to communicate the detail of the scheme”.

In addition to the above, in the last week the GGF’s Managing Director, John Agnew countersigned an industry letter that was sent to the Secretary of State for BEIS and confirmed an imminent meeting with BEIS. John Agnew said, “This week, we will have a video-meeting directly with the BEIS officials who put the Green Homes Grant Scheme together and we’ll be raising our numerous concerns about the scheme including; it’s criteria and timing and the impact it is having on our Members. We understand the full details of the scheme could be unveiled this week.”

The GGF has also recently issued information to the mainstream media, highlighting the negative affect of the scheme announcement on the glazing home improvement sector. Both the BBC and the Daily Telegraph have received information and opinion of the scheme’s impact on the industry and its potential for the sector when it launches in September.

A landmark occasion as GGF welcomes new President

Events, News | 06.02.20

It was a memorable and enjoyable occasion as a guest list comprising of GGF Members, Senior Staff and Members of the trade media, welcomed Mark Austin as the new GGF President at the President’s Reception at The Landmark Hotel, London on 4th February.

In a speech laced with interesting facts and good humour, Mark started his address with an overview of the political background that the industry and country finds itself in.

“2020 is not only a leap year, but the start of a new decade, and it’s a decade that starts with considerable change and challenges for our country and industry. With the UK having left the European Union for better or worse on 31st January. There’s still an air of uncertainty in the business world, so trade organisations like the GGF will become increasingly important to not only help companies cope with change but also to help shape the future of our industry. I don’t have 2020 vision, but I doubt back in 2010 we’d have all been expecting that 10 years later we’d no longer be in the European Union and seeking to do trade deals with the rest of the world as a matter of urgency.”

The presentation took a lighter tone as Mark provided a brief outline of his considerable background in the industry and also touched upon his 14 years in the professional football industry with Wycombe Wanderers F.C. and quipped “as you may gather my work was off the field of play and not on the pitch”.

In 2007, Mark agreed to join family-owned and run independent double-glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd as Marketing Director and during his presentation, he thanked his colleagues for their support.

“I have worked for Hazlemere Windows in High Wycombe for the last 12 years and in 2011 Hazlemere became Conservatory Outlet Dealers who are also GGF Members. Without their support, I would not have been able to become the Chairman of the GGF Windows & Doors Group back in 2017, sit on the GGF’s Home Improvement Executive, nor have been able to join the GGF Board of Directors in September 2018. I’d therefore, like to sincerely thank my Managing Director Rachel Braham-Hill, my Chairman Stuart Braham and my CEO Tony Beale for their trust and backing, plus enabling me back on 1st April 2019 to reduce my hours to 3 days a week in order to be able to do the GGF President’s role justice. What you have each done for me, along with your unwavering support for me is very much appreciated and I can assure you it never has been, and never will be taken for granted.

The Landmark Hotel was the setting for the President’s Reception and it was an apt choice as Mark explained in his speech,

“It is rather fitting that today’s Presidents reception is in the Landmark Hotel, and it’s got nothing to do with my name being Mark! One of the meanings of the word landmark is that its “an event or discovery marking an important stage or turning point in something.”

We are not gathered today in the Empire Room because the GGF wants to become an Empire, but simply to celebrate and landmark how far this exceptional membership organisation has come with your support, and how proud the GGF is to be able to count each of you as GGF Members.”

Mark conveyed his praise to the GGF staff and commercial companies for their contribution and successes over the last few years and referenced some outstanding facts;

On the GGF’s Technical influence: “The GGF technical team has produced over 120 technical publications that integrate the most current international, European and British standards. The GGF sits on all the major standards committees of ISO, BSI and CEN where the GGF cascades Members’ technical comments, suggestions and concerns to help shape the standards that regulate our industry.”

On the GGF’s Political Voice: “The GGF’s voice to Government has grown stronger over the last decade on major issues such as Fire Safety, Energy Efficiency and more recently on Brexit. This is clearly evidenced when the Government commissioned the GGF to inform and help guide companies who manufacture, supply and install glass and glazing products to get ready and deal with the UK leaving the European Union. Thanks to James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs, the GGF secured a £50,000 Government Grant to develop a new web portal “The Brexit Hub” to help GGF Members and the industry prepare for the impact Brexit may have.”

On the Federation’s Membership growth: “In the last 8 years, the GGF Membership has grown considerably with 220 new Members joining the GGF since 2012. To put this in context, the GGF has around 470 Members in total, so it’s a healthy number of relatively new companies who have joined the Federation.”

On Marketing and Brand Awareness: Last year was the highest ever visitor numbers to the GGF website and its consumer advice website MyGlazing.com. Over 300,000 users visited these sites and when combined with the tens of millions the GGF reaches with its trade and consumer PR, it’s clear that the GGF’s audience, as well as its influence, is growing.”

On Training: “In 2019, a major topic of discussion was the importance to our industry of both training and qualifications, which culminated in an open forum with many GGF Members represented to debate the issues further. Since then we’ve reviewed the training and qualifications currently in the UK market, and I am delighted to announce that in the coming months, we will be launching a new GGF Training and Qualifications Academy. This vehicle, working with industry and training providers partners, will provide both training and qualifications opportunities to GGF members, and is a platform that we can use to add further schemes to help train the future generation of people we need in our industry sector.”

Mark moved from GGF successes and plans to the GGF’s commercial subsidiaries with praise for their achievements to date and also acknowledging their vital services to the industry.

“At present the Commercial Managing Director Anda Gregory is on maternity leave, having left the 5 commercial businesses in the very capable hands of each of the commercial business heads, overseen in her absence by Chris Beedel, Head of FENSA. The commercial businesses all continue to make a vital contribution to the GGF Group.

In terms of the GGF’s commercial businesses, many GGF Members use the insurance services of InstallSure (formerly GGFi), one of the largest IBG providers in the Double Glazing industry.

BFRC is the largest & most recognised window and door energy rating service in the industry and again is widely used by GGF members, as well as the whole supply chain, in particular for compliance by installers for Approved Document L.

RISA is a relatively new company to the GGF, and they carry out thousands of assessments, inspections & audits across the UK, undertaking both pre-installation evaluations as well as post-installation assessments.

FENSA was the first GGF Commercial company to be set up 18 years ago, and it continues to go from strength to strength, having overseen 14 million FENSA window and door installations since 2002. Every day more than 6,000 windows & 1,000 doors will be installed by FENSA Approved Registered Installers. To date, approximately 62 million individual window and door products have been installed by FENSA registered installers since 2002. Quite staggering numbers that everyone associated with the GGF Group can be rightly proud of.”

Steve Rice, GGF Managing Director is set to retire at the end of February with John Agnew taking over the role from 1st March and Mark in his speech paid tribute to both employees.

“Under Steve Rice’s leadership championing the technical department for decades, the quality of GGF Technical output remains strong and is for many in the industry the go-to place for technical advice, guidance and help. The GGF’s renewed focus on improving our technical offering and access for GGF Members will continue under incoming GGF MD John Agnew following Steve’s retirement on 28th February after 30 years loyal and faithful service. My sincere and grateful thanks to you Steve for your dedication to the GGF, we all wish you every happiness and good health in your retirement.

As President, I can tell you I’m absolutely delighted along with the rest of the Board about John Agnew’s appointment to take over the reins from Steve. Not only does John bring an understanding of the industry having been Managing Director of Independent Glass for many years, but also as my predecessor as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, John has a firm grasp of the GGF. I very much look forward to working with you John during my 2-year tenure as President.”

In his closing remarks, Mark reassured Members of his commitment and responsibilities as GGF President.

“The GGF as the industry’s leading trade organisation, and voice to the government, has also achieved a huge amount for the industry and its members since its formation in 1977. The Federation has undoubtedly a unique place in this industry and a responsibility to serve its Members and the wider industry.

As President, I will never forget that I’m here to represent you as Members, and furthermore I’m able to bear witness that ever since I was elected to the Board of Directors that every Member of the Board makes decisions always very mindful of the fact we are your custodians, and all Members like yourselves. I’m therefore extremely humbled and honoured to be your President for the next two years.

As President, I will ensure we continue to listen to Members and act in their best interests to ensure the GGF and all connected to it, go from strength to strength. Thank you for your much-appreciated support.”

Obituary: Ken Jackson (1934-2019)

Membership News, News | 06.12.19

The Glass and Glazing Federation was saddened to hear of the passing of Ken Jackson who worked for GGF Member, Pilkington for many years and contributed to the GGF technical documents in the 1980s and 90s.

Ken passed away on Sunday, October 10th aged 85 and will be remembered by colleagues for his work with Environmental Advisory Service at Pilkington’s. He was one of the authors of “BS 8206-2: 1992: Lighting for buildings, Code of practice for daylighting.”

Ken joined Pilkington Brothers Ltd in 1960 and was employed initially in the technical side of the company before becoming Daylighting Engineer in Environmental Advisory Service (EAS); a part of Technical Advisory Service of Pilkington.

He went on to run the EAS for many years going on to be environmental expert with Pilkington Glass Consultants (PGC) before he retired from the company in 1997.

Ian Chisholm, former GGF Deputy Chief Executive who worked with Ken on GGF technical groups commented;
“I am sorry to hear this sad news. Ken was always a motivational working partner with a good sense of humour. He will be sadly missed.”

Brian Waldron, Chairman of the GGF Standards Committee added his own tribute:
“Ken will be remembered within the Glass and Glazing Federation membership for his work on ‘Double glazing and Energy performance’. He was extremely knowledgeable on environmental and energy efficiency. My sympathies to his family.”

Steve Rice, GGF Managing Director commented:
“I worked with Ken on several GGF technical committees and he shared his technical knowledge to advance the Federation. My thoughts are with Ken’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Technical Update: Low Sightline Glass Units

News, Technical News | 08.07.19

LOW SIGHTLINE INSULATING GLASS UNITS AND COMPLIANCE TO THE CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS REGULATIONS

Some Planning Authorities, when granting Planning Consent for works to be carried out on Listed Buildings, buildings in Conservation Areas in Scotland and Conservation Areas in England where an Article 4 Direction has been placed on a property, place conditions on the consent that indirectly limits the type of glazing that can be used.

The conditions usually relate to the dimensions of the window components in place when the listing or conservation area was created. These restrictions on window component design will often restrict both the overall thickness of the Insulating Glass Units and restrict the glazing rebate upstand and therefore the edge-seal depth (edge of glass to top of spacer-bar), usually referred to as the IGU edge-seal sightline.

The conditions imposed by Planning Officers may result in:

  • Overall  thickness of the IGU of 12mm, 14mm or 16mm meaning a cavity width of 4mm, 6, or 8mm respectively when using 4mm glass.
  • Where window sashes/casements are sub-divided into small panes, all panes must be individually glazed, internal/external astragals may not be permitted.
  • Limits on window components usually result in limits on the visual width of glazing bars which sub-divide sashes/casements.
  • The limits imposed on glazing bar widths means that IGUs of standard construction with edge-seal sightlines of 10mm – 12mm cannot be used as the spacer-bar would be visible after glazing.
  • Wide cavities even 6mm enable multiple reflections to be seen in the glazing this may result in the use of Double Glazing being rejected

Some IGU manufacturers supply IGUs with a significantly reduced edge-seal sightline, these IGUs may not have the necessary EN 1279-2, EN 1279-3 and EN 1279-4 test evidence to demonstrate they are durable and therefore may not have a reasonable service life.

The GGFs position in relation to these IGU being placed on the market without the necessary test evidence is given in our publication – Narrow Cavity Insulating Glass Units (IGUs) with Reduced Spacer-bar Sightlines which can be downloaded from the GGF Members Area at:

https://www.ggf.org.uk/publications/window-installation/narrow-cavity-insulating-glass-units-igus-reduced-spacer-bar-sightlines/

It is GGF Best Practice that GGF Members do not manufacture and place Low Sightline IGUs on the market unless they have the necessary test evidence for that specific specification to demonstrate durability and enable them to comply with the requirements of the Construction Products Regulations. GGF Members should also refer to the GGF Industry Guidance document – Insulating Glass Units (IGUs) – Conforming to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) which can be downloaded from the GGF Members Area at:

https://www.ggf.org.uk/publications/industry-guidance/insulating-glass-units-igus-conforming-construction-products-regulation-cpr/

In March this year, Peter and Susan Roden, owners of Mitchell Glass were invited to the GGF offices for VIP treatment to celebrate their company’s longevity and their personal contribution to the industry.

At The President’s Reception held at St Bride Foundation Institute in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral, the GGF presented Peter (a former GGF Scotland Chairman) with a special “Outstanding Service to the Industry” Award. In this interview, Peter shares his views on the GGF and re ects on industry changes.

How does it feel for your company and your work in the glazing industry to be recognised by the GGF?

It’s both a privilege and honour for R Mitchell (Glass) Ltd to be recognised and presented with an award at the President’s Reception to celebrate our outstanding service to the industry since 1875. When Robert Mitchell started his simple glazing business in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, I doubt he could have imagined the company’s growth and the type of work, such as glass extensions, Secured By Design (SBD) windows, and bespoke timber doors, now being carried out by our experienced team.

How has the industry changed over the last 25 years?

When I started selling windows in the 1980s, satin anodised aluminium windows were popular. Then PVCu windows came on the scene, they were warmer with less condensation and cheaper so had more customer benefits. Timber windows were always popular but I think the market has gone full circle and highly insulated aluminium with large expanses of glass have become very popular thanks to television programmes like Grand Designs. I’ve seen massive changes in glass from simple single panes, to the first insulated glass units and through to the latest high tech coatings offering solar control and insulation.

Customers have also changed. They are now more informed due to the internet and don’t just want “double glazing” as in the olden days. They do their research on energy efficiency and insulation properties and are more aware of the choices available. Today, salesmen have to go the extra mile to keep up to date with trends and industry knowledge.

Peter receiving his trophy with Alex Gray, Chair of GGF Scotland, his wife Susan and the GGF President John Agnew

How important is a company’s heritage when it comes to winning business and consumer con dence?

For Mitchell Glass it’s everything. To survive this long, we made sure we looked after our customers and continue to do so. Our industry’s reputation
is still poor in some areas as many companies have disappeared through the years and have not honoured warranties. Our customers usually have researched us on the internet, read our history and though some are simply focussed on price, most understand the value and trust we offer. We honour our guarantees which means customers recommend us and come back for more work.

With a strong brand name and rich history, what are your plans to keep your company and brand name prominent?

In this throwaway age, we focus on the principles that have shaped our company through the last 144 years. “Strict attention to orders” was the promise made by Robert Mitchell in 1875 in his first newspaper advertisement. We try to uphold this principle and integrate it into the company’s culture. Our current mission statement reflects this as we aim to “delight” our customers.

My son Lewis has been Business Development Manager in Mitchell Glass for many years now and became Managing Director earlier this year. He was instrumental in building our spectacular aluminium showroom which has attracted many customers and helped them to compare different doors and profiles. We are now planning an upgrade to our PVCu showroom to display our new SBD windows. I am confident that under Lewis’ direction we will continue to give outstanding service to our customers in the years ahead and in doing so keep our brand name and reputation prominent in the industry and to homeowners.

What do you value most about being a GGF Member?

Membership helps us to keep up-to-date with industry changes, regulations and future innovations through regular meetings and publications. At GGF Scotland meetings, invited speakers usually give good relevant presentations and it is always useful to discuss challenges and technical issues with GGF staff. Also, meetings have many enthusiastic Members who are happy to share knowledge and experience. We’ve been in the GGF since 1987 and have enjoyed many benefits and I hope we continue to enjoy many more.

GGF Member recognised for milestone FENSA installation

Membership News, News | 29.08.18

A GGF Member company has been recognised for the unique role it played in helping FENSA register an unprecedented 13 millionth installation earlier this year.

DG Solutions draws on a range of PVCu windows, doors, porches, conservatories and roofline products as well as a wealth of industry experience to deliver bespoke solutions for its clients.

The GGF Member company has offices across the South of England and this June it installed six windows and two doors at a property in Oxfordshire. Little did it know it had just completed the 13 millionth installation to be registered through the FENSA self-certification scheme for replacement doors and windows.

It was a highly anticipated milestone for FENSA and one celebrated as both symbolic of the great work done every day by its members and evidence of its status as the largest and longest serving Competent Person Scheme in the fenestration industry.

Recognition for a special installation

Anda Gregory, Managing Director of FENSA, visited the team at DG Solutions to present Business Manager Thomas Ward with a special certificate recognising his company’s landmark installation.

Anda commented, “I was delighted to meet DG Solutions and award our special Certificate of Achievement for carrying out the 13 millionth installation in FENSA’s history. It is recognition of the great work that both DG Solutions and FENSA do to ensure homeowners have their windows legally installed to high professional standards.”

Anda Gregory and Bill Nash of DG Solutions
Anda Gregory, Managing Director of FENSA, with Bill Nash of DG Solutions

Thomas said that it was marvellous to discover that DG Solutions had processed the lucky 13 millionth FENSA registration.

He commented, “This accolade is just the icing on the cake following a lot of hard work in the restructuring of our business model and product offering, which we hope will move the company to the next level.”

Reaping the rewards of FENSA membership

DG Solutions has more than 30 years’ experience in the replacement window and door industry and has built a strong reputation by delivering excellent customer service alongside an extensive range of products and services.

Though a FENSA installer since 2012, the company continues to discover new ways to benefit from its FENSA membership.

Thomas explained, “We are now starting to take greater advantage of the free BFRC opt-in for FENSA members, meaning we can use our manufacturers’ energy rated products and brand them as our own rated products. I have no doubt this will give us a further edge in the market place.”

FENSA celebrates its members

For FENSA, the registration of 13 million installations over just sixteen years signals the efficacy of a scheme founded at the request of Government in 2002.

Chris Beedel, Director of Membership, commented, “This achievement highlights how successful the scheme has become in a relatively short period of time. It also shows the coverage and trust in the FENSA brand and the loyalty of FENSA members. We have 6000 installer companies who clearly want to maintain high industry standards by ensuring their homeowners have legally and professionally installed windows and doors.”

FENSA, a GGF Group company, was established as a Competent Person Scheme in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales. As the market leader, FENSA is the largest and longest established Competent Person Scheme within the replacement window and door industry. Its role for FENSA members is to enable companies to self-certify compliance under the Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.

Mark Austin elected GGF Vice-President

Membership News, News | 27.06.18

The GGF is pleased to announce that Mark Austin, Marketing Director of Hazlemere Windows, has been confirmed as GGF Vice-President by the GGF Board.

Mark, who is also the Chairman of the GGF Window and Door Group, was elected for the vice-presidency by his fellow members of the Home Improvement Executive and takes on the role with immediate effect. As Vice-President, Mark represents the Home Improvement side of the industry on the GGF Board.

Mark has a solid background in working with membership organisations. During his time working as a Director in the football industry (for Wycombe Wanderers and QPR), Mark was Chairman of the southern region of the Marketing Managers Association (MMA) and he has also chaired quarterly meetings of commercial managers from the Premier League, Championship, Leagues One & Two. As Chairman of the MMA, he also attended the national The Institute of Football Management & Administration (IFMA) quarterly executive meetings.

In 2008, Mark joined Hazlemere Window Company Ltd – a family owned and independently run double glazing manufacturer & installer of high quality bespoke aluminium windows, doors, conservatories, orangeries, brise soleil and curtain walling. The company also supplies and fits UPVC windows, doors, conservatories, orangeries and Roofline, along with roof lantern lights, secondary glazing and solid roof conservatories.

At Hazlemere Windows, Mark works in the Commercial Division doing Marketing for the Retail & Trade Division, along with promoting the Group’s six websites, plus its showrooms in High Wycombe and Welwyn Garden City.

On accepting the role of GGF Vice-President, Mark commented: “I am pleased to have been elected as GGF Vice-President and happy to represent and express Members’ interests and concerns across all the sectors within the industry. I would also encourage each member company to get the maximum from their GGF annual membership fee by ensuring they get a return on their investment through benefits such as networking at the numerous meetings and events the GGF organises all over the country. I’d also like to Members to take full advantage of all the marketing and PR tools offered free to Members via the members area on the new GGF website.”

In his role as Vice-President, Mark will support the current GGF President John Agnew until 31st December 2019 when John’s tenure expires. Both roles are purely voluntary ones, along with all the other elected Directors who sit on the GGF Board.

Mark summarised: “It is fairly well known that the GGF has had a lot of personnel changes over the last few years as it has been going through a restructuring and governance review. It now needs a period of stability, something I aim to assist with. There are now several new Directors on the GGF Board, blessed with decades of experience in the Glazing Industry, so with them and the rest of the dedicated volunteer elected GGF Directors I hope we can steer the GGF ship into less choppy waters and revitalise what is at heart a superb organisation with over 40 years of history.”

30 COMPANIES JOIN GGF THIS YEAR SO FAR

News | 21.05.18

The GGF has had an excellent start to 2018 with no fewer than 30 companies joining the Federation since the start of January.

This continued growth in GGF Membership comes following a restructure in 2017 and the subsequent appointments of Shaun McAllister as GGF Managing Director and Richard Hearn as Head of Membership in January and November last year respectively.

Shaun McAllister commented: “It is pleasing to see the numbers of companies joining the GGF and we have many more in the pipeline enquiring about joining. As the main trade body for the glass and glazing industry the GGF is constantly talking to more businesses and reinforcing the benefits of belonging and hence more are now joining the GGF.”

Richard Hearn added: “We have made a great start to the year although our key membership retention and recruitment plans have still to come to fruition. I am delighted that so many good companies have joined the GGF.”

Crystal Clear Bristol Limited

| 29.10.17

About Us

Crystal Clear was founded in 1999 by James Mizen and Tony Fox, who were determined to offer their customers high quality products and the highest standards of customer care.

More from James, MD of Crystal Clear:

“Tony and I had both worked in the home improvement industry since our first jobs as production manager and carpenter respectively and started the company after spotting a gap in the market for a Bristol-based windows, doors and double glazing company that could supply and fit the very best products with a focus on customer care and a professional service for every project, large or small. “

2013 was a year of expansion and change, with Tony retiring from the business and Crystal Clear moving some of the team into the premises next door and extending the showroom in the existing building. In addition to the larger doors and windows showroom, the company has become even more of a family business, with eight members of the Mizen family now part of the Crystal Clear team.

Our repeat business, referrals and recommendations are a crucial part of our company’s success and our employees strive to maintain this.
