Have Your Say – VAT Relief On Windows & Doors – Open Consultation

Meetings, Members News, News, Politics | 31.03.23

As everyone will be aware of by now, improving the energy efficiency of the UK’s housing stock and increasing the proportion of energy provided from low-carbon, renewable energy sources will play a key part of meeting the legally binding commitment to reach the Governments Net-Zero green-house gas emissions target by 2050.

The government have made a commitment to support improvements in energy efficiency across the economy to bring down bills for households, businesses and the public sector, with an ambition to reduce the UK’s final energy consumption from buildings and industry by 15 per cent by 2030 against 2021 levels.

By Clicking Here, you’ll be able to read further information on the Open consultation – Call for evidence: VAT energy saving materials relief – improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The call for evidence seeks views on the inclusion of additional technologies that meet the government’s objectives for the relief.

There were two questions raised in the House of Commons after the list was republished in March 2022, and Lord Foster of Bath asked for the inclusion of glazing as part of his amendment to the Energy Pricing Bill. All were rebuffed by treasury on the bases that 86% of homes have double glazing and also because of the revenue that the Government would lose.

This consultation gives us an opportunity to ask Government to include window and doors on the Energy Savings Materials list which would attract Zero VAT.

This is a great occasion for British Glass, Flat Glass Manufacturers Association and the GGF to further collaborate and to submit responses to the consultation.

Responses are required by 31st May 2023.

Insuring your glazing – advice for windows & doors

| 24.08.18

Like anything in life, home improvements can sometimes go wrong. But what happens when something happens to windows or doors you’ve had installed in your home?

Rear view of a woman relaxing sitting on a couch with the hands on the head and looking outdoors through the window of the livingroom at home

Are you insured?
Do you have valid guarantees?
Can you go back to the company who installed or sold you the windows and/or doors?
And what happens if the company is no longer in business?
What if the replacements or the repairs are costing you money, time and inconvenience?

It can be a nightmare but with a bit of forethought and using the right company, the nagging questions can be easily avoided and problems kept to a minimum.

Three key tips for ensuring you are covered.

  • When your windows are being installed ask the company you’ve employed about the product guarantees (sometimes referred to as warranties).
  • Check the guarantee is insurance backed (i.e. that there is an insurance policy underwriting the guarantee).
  • Check the small print in the guarantee and make sure you know what is covered.

The industry norm for guarantees is 10 years on windows and doors and that usually covers the glass, frame and ironmongery.

Selecting the right glazing company

Satisfied Client Looking At Bills For House Building Work

All companies listed and featured on MyGlazing.com are Members of the Glass and Glazing Federation and will ensure your windows and doors have insurance backed guarantees that are also transferrable should you decide to sell your home.

Companies registered with FENSA – the original and largest Competent Person Scheme in the replacement window sector in England and Wales – offer compulsory insurance backed guarantees as part of their service.

No matter which glazing company you use, MyGlazing.com recommends you use a firm that is registered with Installsure – the Glass and Glazing Federation’s insurance broker – who have an established reputation as a leading provider of warranty insurance products to the home improvements sector.

When looking through the array of great windows and doors in the market, it can be easy to put Insurance to the back of your mind, but when selecting your glazing, make sure you’ve got the job fully covered. Get guaranteed protection and peace of mind on your investment.

GGF launches new guide to the Planning Process for windows & doors in England

News, Politics | 02.10.17

New 24-page publication covering Planning requirements for window and door installation available as free download for GGF Members

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has published a new guidance booklet designed to help its Members understand and adhere to Planning requirements in England.

A Guide to the Planning Process and its effect on the Replacement of Windows and Doors in England gives an overview of the Planning System as it affects the installation of windows and doors in England (Scotland and Wales have separate regulations).

The publication includes an explanation of the Planning System, the principles guiding Planning decisions and the different types of Planning Permission.

It also addresses an important change of emphasis between the Planning Act of 1990 and the National Planning Policy Framework of 2012. The latter Act reflects a greater recognition of the need to ‘conserve’ rather than ‘preserve’ and to balance wider benefits of environmental, social and economic considerations when making decisions on heritage assets.

Additionally the guide features an easy-to-use flow chart for determining whether a homeowner already has Planning Consent to replace windows and doors through Householder Permitted Development Rights.

GGF Members can download this publication for free from the GGF website: A Guide to the Planning Process
