GGF Launches New Safety and Security Glazing Good Practice Guide

News, Politics | 21.01.14

The new guide covers the use of safety and security glass and glazing in buildings including not just windows, doors and curtain walling but also interiors such as shower enclosures and elevator enclosures.

The guide also details the key performances of safety and security glazing when subject to manual, ballistic and explosive attacks. Other areas concerning the safety of persons such as overhead glazing, protective glass barriers, glass stairs and floors are also comprehensively covered.

The guide, which effectively brings all the key information on safety and security glazing into one publication, is primarily aimed at informing architects, specifiers, building planners, surveyors and building managers.

Steve Rice, Director of Glazing and Secretary of the GGF Glazing Executive, has been instrumental in the production of this publication by collaborating with several Industry experts who sit on the GGF Safety and Security Technical Group. Steve commented, “This publication plugs a huge gap in the current industry information on safety and security glazing. Companies in the Industry have been waiting a long time for a comprehensive authoritative publication that not only covers the subject in detail, but also supplies the technical datasheets for reference, to help companies manufacture and install security and safety glazing to prevent or resist accidents occurring.”

Every Member Company has been sent a printed copy of the safety and security glazing – Good Practice Guide, but it also available for download in the GGF Members Area of the GGF’s website;   https://www.ggf.org.uk/publication/safety_and_security_glazing_good_practice

For more information on the GGF Safety and Security Glazing Groups please contact Steve Rice, srice@ggf.org.uk or visit the Groups’ web pages;

GGF starts new Aluminium Group

Uncategorized | 27.08.21

The GGF’s is pleased to announce the creation of the new Aluminium Group for companies operating in the aluminium sector.

The idea for the new group was founded in the GGF’s Technical who identified a gap in the current GGF technical group infrastructure.

David Borland, GGF Senior Technical Officer

David Borland, GGF Senior Technical Officer explained “Part of the responsibilities of the Technical Department is to continually review the service we provide to Members and most importantly recognise gaps in that service. It is during these reviews and discussions it became clear one area of the Industry which needed additional support was the Aluminium sector.

The new Aluminium Group will attract interest not only from companies in GGF Membership but also many companies who are non-members. In the last few months the GGF has also seen new members join the Federation with specific interest in the aluminium sector. In the last few years there has also been a revival of aluminium in the home improvement sector with products such as bi-folding doors and secondary glazing which is becoming a popular solution for heritage buildings and those in conservation areas.

David Borland continued, “While there is substantial overlap with our Windows & Doors Group, there are areas of fenestration which are unique to aluminium such as shopfronts, commercial entrance screens, curtain walling & Commercial windows. We hope with the support of a considerable number of existing members with aluminium interests, the new Aluminium Group can prove to be a valuable technical asset for the GGF and our Members”.

Members who are interested in joining this Group are asked to contact Senior Technical Officer David Borland by email at dborland@ggf.org.uk

The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd first ever GGF Member to attain GLASS Charter Gold level

Events, Membership News, News | 28.09.18

The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd has become the first ever GGF Member to achieve a Gold rating in the GGF GLASS Charter Merit Scheme, taking a giant leap into the health and safety record books.

Described as ‘the pinnacle of good Health and Safety management’, the Gold level of the GGF GLASS Charter Merit Scheme is awarded only to companies that can demonstrate that a health and safety culture is embedded right across their business and that the very highest standards are adhered to at every level.

For this reason the GGF is proud to announce that The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd has become the first ever GGF Member to graduate from Silver to Gold in the GGF’s roadmap scheme for continuous Health & Safety improvement.

The team from the Chelmsford-based commercial window and door installer made history by successfully upgrading from the GLASS Charter Level Silver 3 which they received last year, having completed the final piece in the jigsaw: eliminating the need for their fitters to climb onto the roofs of their vans to remove ladders.

GGF CEO Kevin Buckley presents Katie Thornton of The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd with GLASS Charter Gold Level Certificate
GGF Group CEO Kevin Buckley presents Katie Thornton of The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd with the GLASS Charter Gold Level Certificate at GGF Members Day 2018

In fact the company has come up with an innovative solution that it says could be rolled out to other installers aiming to achieve the same level of health and safety compliance. It has worked with a specialist van supplier to develop a brand new mechanical lifting system which sits in the centre of the roof to lift and lower the ladders.

David Thornton, chair of The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd is justifiably proud of the company’s achievement. He said: “We have enjoyed the challenge of reaching the Gold standard and the incremental improvements we have made will certainly make a difference to our fitters. With so many of our clients increasingly recognising the value of this GGF scheme, I expect it to have commercial benefits for us in time as well.”

Katie Thornton, Director of Compliance and Administration at The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd accepted the Gold award on behalf of the company from GGF Group Chief Executive Kevin Buckley at GGF Members’ Day, held on the 12th of September at The National Conference Centre.

Phil Pinnington, GGF Health and Safety Director said, “I am both pleased and proud to have been able to recommend The Window Company (Contracts) Ltd to receive the Gold award. The Scheme does call for high standards and David’s team have clearly proved that sensible Health and Safety is possible for any size of business.”

I would also encourage each member company to get the maximum from their GGF annual membership fee by ensuring they get a return on their investment through benefits such as networking at the numerous meetings and events the GGF organises all over the country. I’d also like to Members to take full advantage of all the marketing and PR tools offered free to Members via the members area on the new GGF website.”

In his role as Vice-President, Mark will support the current GGF President John Agnew until 31st December 2019 when John’s tenure expires. Both roles are purely voluntary ones, along with all the other elected Directors who sit on the GGF Board.

Mark summarised: “It is fairly well known that the GGF has had a lot of personnel changes over the last few years as it has been going through a restructuring and governance review. It now needs a period of stability, something I aim to assist with. There are now several new Directors on the GGF Board, blessed with decades of experience in the Glazing Industry, so with them and the rest of the dedicated volunteer elected GGF Directors I hope we can steer the GGF ship into less choppy waters and revitalise what is at heart a superb organisation with over 40 years of history.”
