Touchstone Glazing Solutions Ltd

| 18.09.17

With over 25 years worth of experience in the traditional leaded light industry, we developed Touchstone Insulead glazing system (Patented) to specifically overcome the problem of double glazing windows in a heritage building situation. No modification to the existing fabric of the building is required as the Insulead glazing fits where the original was located, and is made using only traditional materials.

Directly glazed into the original stonework

An appearance virtually identical to the original

Touchstone Steelyte opening casements are uniquely designed and constructed from Stainless Steel. Thermally broken and fully weather stripped, they take a full 28mm unit. They combine the narrowest of sight lines with security, durability and elegance. The steel is all but immune from corrosion. Whilst powder coated for the heritage market openers can be supplied polished for modern building applications.

Stainless steel and effectively maintenance free

Due to Touchstone Insulead’s unique ability to take any thickness of unit (28mm standard) it is possible to incorporate specialised glass for the purposes of security, UV filtration, energy conservation and sound inhibition all whilst maintaining a traditional appearance. It is even possible to use the original glazing either within the double glazing or mounted in front or behind as a decorative screen.

Extensive range of glazing options including original

Shapes and out of square windows easily accommodated

Touchstone Insulead has been specifically designed for double glazed units. It is fully drained and thermally broken. In the unlikely event of water ingress through, for example stone porosity, the inbuilt drainage channels allow the water to exit to the outside via weep holes. Combined with warm edge spacer bar technology the highest level of insulation is possible.

Fully drained and thermally broken

  • Double Glazing for heritage buildings
  • Steelyte Stainless Steel Opening Casements
  • Insulead Patented Frameless Double Glazing
  • BFRC “A” Rated
  • Shaped and Out of square windows easily accomodated

Heritage Windows – In name only?

Members News | 10.02.20

There is officially no definition for a heritage window; however there are many windows referred to and claimed to be, heritage windows. Historic England does however refer to traditional windows suitable for Heritage Assets. To be suitable for a Heritage Asset such as in a conservation area, the window would have to stand up to close scrutiny by the planning officer to ensure it is a good visual match in appearance to the timber original.  Consequentially, cutting corners would not be possible in this this situation.

However, with regards to new build projects which follow a more traditional design, or home owners with period style homes that have permitted development rights, no such scrutiny would be applied.  It is therefore all too easy to supply a window which, to all intents and purposes would appear traditional to the untrained eye.  The upside of this for the customer would appear to be the price but the value could be in question.

Besides looking slim, beautiful and stylish, what does a customer demand to receive in a truly traditional yet low maintenance sash window crafted by professionals?

·         Slim sightlines through both the upper and lower sashes to maximise the visible glass area

·         Equal panes in both sashes to create a balanced appearance consistent with original timber sash windows

·         “Putty line” glazing and staff bead outer frames

·         Neat chamfered matching astragal bars externally and ovolo internally to match originals

·         Foiled woodgrain finish

·         Continuous sash horns

·         Patented Timberweld wood effect ‘butt jointed’ corner construction

·         Bonded Georgian bars, precision cut inside and out for a three dimensional character with a patented clip system to permanently secure the bars in place

·         Deep bottom rail sympathetic to original designs

·         Integral mullion for multi-light windows to reduce sightlines from 153mm to 99mm and to match original timber detail

·         Deep 55mm cill an original timber feature

·         Elegant and stylish cam catches in a range of colours to match traditional design

On top of all the above, customers will also expect to have their windows come with an A rating for energy efficiency, a Secured by Design accreditation for security and a very rare BBA accreditation for longevity and performance, added benefits that are missing from most offerings.

Carol Slade, Managing Director for Masterframe says “We have seen an increase in demand for traditional sash windows with both homeowners and developers returning to a much loved style. It is important that we continue to deliver products that are as true to original as possible. We never cut corners and respect all the original features so that customers get the true benefit of fully enjoying a window design that has become an important part of our heritage.”

Masterframe Windows Ltd

| 18.09.17

Masterframe has been in business for 31 years and is the only true “specialist” sash window manufacturer in the country.

We are all about sash windows, however, although you’ll see many of our photographs used on the GGF sites and we’ve been GGF members since 1997, you won’t find us on myglazing.com because as a trade manufacturer (we don’t install) we cannot be listed.

Each year we must stay ahead of the competition, so each year we develop new and exciting features like Timberweld®, Georgi-clips® and bespoke GPR sections.

Dedicated to retaining the elegant proportions through continuous innovation, creative flair, passion and design, you can be confident we set extremely high standards with excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail.

You’ll find we’re not cheap; indeed we’d go so far as to say we’re considerably more expensive than other sash window producers, but there are good reasons for that, not least because we include far more.

We’re happy to explain differences, the standards we set ourselves, the attention to detail we insist upon and gladly provide a wealth of testimonials from clients who trust us with their orders.

You decide the specification which suits your needs best, the benchmark you expect new windows to attain, using only the features that you believe are right for your project. Our job is to help you understand what the important features are and the choices you have, like:

  • Patented Timberweld® technology for perfectly sealed corners
  • Choice of three trade ranges with exclusive profile systems
  • Exclusive London sash and frame design
  • A rated for energy efficiency
  • Secured by Design

We would be delighted to help you further with your project.

  • Low maintenance PVC-U sash windows
  • GRP fibreglass windows
  • Box Sash Vertical sliders
  • Suitable for Conservation areas
