The future for Energy Efficiency under a Conservative Majority Government.

It’s not a policy area that dominates the front pages but for the new Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Amber Rudd MP, the energy efficiency of the UK’s building stock will be something that she’ll have to address in the coming months and years.

Rudd’s appointment has been met with a sense of enthusiasm by the sector as a result of her pro-green credentials and previous support for energy efficiency. Only in March of this year she said that, “Making households more energy efficient is the surest and safest way to reduce energy bills”. This support will cheer a sector which has been somewhat disappointed by the previous Coalition Government’s failure to deliver on the promised “revolutionary” Green Deal scheme. With the scheme’s low levels of uptake, and at a time when departmental budgets will be ever more restricted, the sector will be hoping that Rudd will prove to be an effective champion the value of government incentives for energy efficiency measures.

It’ll be up to Amber Rudd to seize the reigns at DECC quickly and effectively in order to steer her Department and reinvigorate the Government’s appetite to become the “Greenest Government ever”.
